Hello everyone! My name is Solange, I created this group a while back, and have been away for a while, had 2 kids in the meantime, and I missed this place sooo much! So I'm back, love what is being said here. I would also like to offer my own blog on global women at http://keurawa.com, if anyone would like to stop by and offer a soul bite...I can't wait to finish reading everyone in this group.

I just turned in a book review that's coming out next month, and although it was an excellent book, the ending left me cold.OK, so maybe I'm not the biggest fan of "urban" fiction, but is it…Continue

I did an interview with African American poet Sandra Turner-Barnes and I thought I’d share it with you. She’s such an inspiring Sister, I felt I just had to do a feature on her. http://www.caribbeanbookblog.wordpress.com Hope you enjoy it.

Comment by sara selznick on August 16, 2011 at 2:10pm Did anybody see Sunday's discussion about the movie version of "The Help?" They're main points are that a) it's the white woman driving the Civil Rights movement, and it's a Civil Rights movement facing white supremecists who are absolutely without teeth (or dogs, or sheriffs, or lynchings, or brandings, or burnings out--in fact, the only violence is of stage, at the hands of the African-American husband. like, in which planet did this take place?

Comment by sara selznick on August 16, 2011 at 2:07pm Okay, I've read sixteen, but I've read others by chestnutt, too, and I highly, highly recommend a book of short stories by Chester Himes. And where's Nella Larson here?
Oh, oh, oh, I loved the Street. I mean, it's hard to say loved, because it's immersion in depression, but it's so intense, it feels like you're literally inside her in her situation.
I also have to say I am not a fan of The Known World. There is so much in there that's lovely, but he puts in that magical negro character that's mostly in white's writing about black people or Native Americans, that character who is mentally ill, but in a sweet, magical way that gives her deep wisdom and, say, allows her to see the future. (Think the blacksmith in the movie "the Black Stallion," driving out the the mysterious fog, or the crazy sister in The Secret Life of Bees, who is suicidal, but in a good way, you know? Ugh.)
Still, how lovely to see a list like this. I've got to jump on those I haven't read.

Stop by http://www.InsideTheBooks.com to check out my interview with One Million Men and Me author Kelly Sterling Lyons.
(One Million Men and Me, a great book for children 5-10, is her first picture book but her second children’s book. Her first being NEATE: Eddie’s Ordeal.)
