Of Saints, Cakes, and Redemption

This is an excerpt from my personal essay (food writing), published by Leite's Culinaria in August 2010. The essay details my year-long journey baking a simple nut and spice cake for Saint Phanourios, the Greek Orthodox patron saint of the lost and found."I’m hardly what you’d call devout. Baptized Presbyterian, despite being Greek on my mother’s side, I know next to nothing about saints. I do, however, know a thing or two about cakes—including the fleeting, unhealthy way they can fill an empty…See More

A valentine to my kitchen scale: a short piece of mine was published on the Leite's Culinaria website as part of a Valentine's Day feature called "Ode to a Microplane . . . and 18 other declarations of kitchen love." Fine company, I'd say.An excerpt is on my blog, Feeding the Saints,…See More

Hi A.C.  I think I finally figured out how to get back to you.  Yes, I contacted you.  At the time, you were, I believe, looking for books to review in a particular category.  My book, Storied Dishes:  What Our Family Recipes Tell Us About Who We Are and Where We've Been. came out in November.  It's a collection of 50 essays by women from multiple cultural backgrounds telling the stories behind an important recipe in their lives, and then giving the recipe itself.  Let me know if you're still interested.

Allison,

Thanks for friending. I must say, I admire your writing's gentleness and carefulness as well as your sense of adventure. Your writing feels good to read in the same way that a good singer feels good to hear. I don't anticipate "wrong notes;" I just relax and enjoy.

This week I'm finishing up a project of creating audio versions of the recipes. It takes me about two days to do each one, because adding music and effects creates an entirely different feeling for them. I think that when a page is sparsely written (as these recipes are), readers can bring all of their psyche's prejudices and associations to the task of reading. With these recipes I have counted on those prejudices and associations to help readers create their own hilarity. With audio, though, it's different. The moment that I add sound, I create an impression that probably squelches a listener's ability to populate the recipe with private psychological matter. So I have to create the audio as if it's an additional character in an already-written drama. It's a lot of fun, but involves a fair amount of backtracking and editing, and then there's the whole matter of loosening up my voice so that I can make a recordable squawk.

Anyway, next week I'm going to write at least one more recipe. I hope you were serious about suggesting that I send it your way for consideration. The web site looks terrific, and the number and quality of comments that you got on your essay tells me that the readers are engaged and eager to interact. And hey, and they're foodies, too! What could be better?
