A former college-newspaper critic presents: the Grown-up Version of a Best-of List

Posted on December 10, 2011 at 4:41pm 0 Comments

It’s list season, with Best Movies of the Year, Best Albums of the Year, etc., being published everywhere you turn.

At a younger age, I could have actually given a fairly educated take on all these subjects.

But gone are the days of lying on the floor doing nothing but listening to music, of actually subscribing to Rolling Stone, of going to the movies without worrying that I might have to take out a loan.

Dear Alison
How great to hear from Carthage, Virginia Cherrill's hometown, wonderfully named as the birthplace of such a fabled - and beguiling - beauty. But Virginia, luckily, had a rather happier story! It was such fun to research and write Chaplin's Girl and to find a really witty, sexy and generous woman who succeeded in keeping her integrity in a rough and tumble world. It grieves me that I never knew her, except as the voice of the tapes from which I worked, but her fan club more than made up for that loss. It says a lot about Virginia that so many of her friends named their daughters for her, I think
I have a pair of tiny gold earring that the Maharajah of Jaipur gave her and wear them as often as I can. But I think they probably looked a lot better on the original recipient!
Thanks so much:
Miranda
