Hi, Alle What a great topic. To date, I have published four books. My publishers are, in order, Houghton Mifflin, Simon & Schuster, Bloomsbury, my sister and Grand Central. See the "my sister" one in there? Despite beginning my career…

Yes, now I know the first step is high level editing first, not line editing. Live and learn. Happy writing back at ya! Guess I better go do some 8-)

Jessica, I have! Darcie has worked on several short stories with me and I plan to use her for the next novel. Here's her website http://penandpestle.com/  I was lucky to find her because a fellow author in my writer's group…

Regina Y. Swint replied to the discussion 'Need question for publishing blog on large media site' in the group Novelists (Struggling or Not)
I agree with that, Serena.  My goodness, there are so many who claim to be pros at editing, but they're really not worth the money.  I've been pretty lucky so far, but I've run across some who were near misses for me; and…

Hi, Alle, Thanks very much.  And thanks for asking.  :) 1.  I found myself thinking about being a non-profit publishing house because I'd like to explore the possibility of raising funds to support community-driven and/or…

Hi Serena - Did you end up finding a good one? Was it just luck or did you find a good resource?

Serena Schreiber replied to the discussion 'Need question for publishing blog on large media site' in the group Novelists (Struggling or Not)
I can echo much of what Regina said. I'm an indie-published author, thanks for clarifying that! What I can add to the discussion, K.L. Gore, is that not all editors are worth the hard earned money we pay them. I found it very…

Wow, I wondered if this would ever become an issue. Our SCBWI chapter meets at a local (well an hour away from home!) B & N once a month. This dialogue came up last month when we were discussing the different ways of publishing. It was said that…

Shawn Lamb replied to the discussion 'B&N refusing to stock any books published by Amazon' in the group Publishing Industry News
Does she self-publish through Createspace? It's owned by Amazon and there are certain price points given for each book depending upon trim size and page number. For my longest book, it wouldn't let me go below $14.99.  As for the…

Dera R Williams replied to the discussion 'B&N refusing to stock any books published by Amazon' in the group Publishing Industry News
Oh, okay. I stand corrected. Now that you mention it when I told a writer she was charging too much for her ebook through Amazon ($16.99), she said she lowered it considerably but within two days, it was back to the original price and this happened…

I did a post about recent happening with Amazon and B&N with links to articles from the UK, NY Times and Business Week. I don't think it's a tantrum. Amazon's practices are ticking everyone off.…

I thought Amazon.com just reported another record-breaking quarter. Sooo, is this feud a result of Amazon's success and seemingly monopoly on ther literary world?  Sounds like a tantrum to me.

CreateSpace verifies that I am still relevant

I was a little worried that I wasn't. I am so brilliant, yes; but much of my insider information comes from the six years I spent running The Hugo House InPrint series. This was 2001-2007. Our monthly panel of agents and editors often debated whether or not Web publications counted as "real," and if a writer needed to blog. Meet the Flintstones

On Dec. 7th, I attended a two-hour, soft-sell commercial for Amazon's CreateSpace. Sponsored by the same, the free event ("Pitch 2.0")…

Hi Alle, The flower symbolism I'm referring to in that title is actually more in the Georgia O'Keefe sense of symbolism. :) But hey, my first novel is out now! Check it out.
http://riverpoetsjournal.com/Lilly-Press-NewBooks.html I really do hope to get to Seattle at some point. We'll have to sell a bunch of books here first though. This is a small publisher and this is going to be a grassroots thing. But it'll grow. I just know it!

Thanks for that comment Alle. I hadn't thought of the originality component, but I do think that ensuring our writing has moments of surprise is important.
