Profile Information

Who I am:
By day, I'm an Associate Professor of writing at a liberal arts college in rural Virginia. There, I founded the Appalachian Writing Project, a network of the best teachers in the region whose mission is to write and teach other teachers how to teach writing (which is rarely included in teacher ed prep programs.) I write mostly nonfiction and have been fairly successful with it but my heart's desire is to publish a novel. I'm also a mommy to a 3 year old and a 15 month old so my writing is squeezed into sleepy nighttime hours or stolen moments here and there throughout the day.
My professional website is here:

Books I've written, anthologies I've contributed to, and any scripts or plays I've authored:
I have one nonfiction book pending publication. I've written one unpublished novel and am working on a young adult novel. I'm co-editing a book on dialects that will go out for reviews with a university press in the fall.
Media outlets that I currently write for:
I am a former newspaper columnist. My pieces have appeared on NPR affiliates, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Tampa Tribune. I wrote for the Bristol Herald-Courier for six years.
My writing is:
Fiction, Nonfiction, Memoir

Amy, Welcome to the novelist group! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. And we do a live chat every Wednesday; hope you can join us for that!
