Hey everyone! I've never been in Critique group before, but it sounds useful. I recently wrote a YA novel and so far the only people that have read it are my friends. While I appreciate their enthusiastic comments of, "This is my new…

Was out of the country for a two week working vacation (taking care of a boat) for the last half of June. Been home two weeks today and haven't accomplished a single thing, really. What the hell is wrong with me?

- I'm excited about my novel again, right up until the moment I open the document and put my hands to the keyboard.

- The deadline for the paper I run is this Friday and I haven't written anything. Started my column, but haven't even outlined my feature article or… Continue

Just a quick observation on distractions

Posted on July 9, 2009 at 8:02pm 7 Comments

Every morning I get up and go straight to the computer with the intention of working on my novel for two hours or 2000 words, whichever takes longer.

Yet many mornings I'm distracted before I even get started. I work from home and use Outlook to keep up with my clients and email and it's always up. Always. And I've begun to realize that if I don't shut it down at night, preferably at the end of the business day, but at least before I go to bed, it's SO very tempting to just real… Continue

I just opened the door to the novelist group for you, Amy - welcome! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. And we do a live chat every Wednesday; hope you can join us for that!

Hi Amy! I'm glad you're interested in the anthology. I think it's gonna be a good one.

Amy,
For some reason, I couldn't email you but it's late and maybe I didn't copy the address correctly. Will try again tomorrow. Thanks for your interest. I'll put you on the list (you're first!) and as soon as Zetta gets the guidelines up you can figure out which of your columns would work.

I'm headed down south to Perdido Bay from my home in Massachusetts in about a week. If I can work out the timing, maybe we can have coffee or something on my way back.

Thanks again. It's really intense as I'm sure you are well aware. Best to you, Nicky

Hi Amy, Just wondering how your are doing with your work and if there is anything we can do at the Southern Writers Group to be supportive. Let us know what's going on with your work and your life. Best, Nicky

Hey Amy! I'm that chick from Virtual Critique! (Wasn't sure the proper way to get a hold of you, so I thought I'd stalk you here.) My synopsis is ready to take a look at (if you still have the time.) I won't lie to you - it needs work. But don't worry, I won't expect you to critique every word, I just need some ideas because my brain is officially FRIED.

What's the best way to send this to you?

Hi Amy, thanks for your message! I don't find it on either my or your page though, a bit of a mystery... Alligator wrestling sounds amazing and amazingly similar to some of the web acrobatics I find myself doing in order to navigate She Writes etc.... Stay away from the tail, and I look forward to your tale! :) Renate

Amy, I laugh at just about everything you write, but I LOVE your post about pens. I too, have been on the life-long, and never-ending quest for the perfect pen. I died laughing when you mentioned blots. Blots are the scourge of pen existence! Even if a pen has been promoted to the status of favorite pen of the moment, if it develops a case of blots, it's GONE. And yes, weight of paper, nib of pen, feel in the hand! YIKES!!!! I hate to drive in snow and yet I've been known to go out in one on yet another pen odyssey. Anyway, I will leave it at that, but you have at least one other cousin in crime!

Merci beaucoup, Amy. I don't do my writing in cafés any more either, unless I am back in Paris or somewhere else in Europe. The "magical pen" I used back then has been replaced by the computer -- magical in its own right. I sometimes take the laptop outside, but mostly I feel too impatient nowadays to want to "fuss" too much: I need to get to write, communicate, get it done... as fast as possible. No frills. Sigh...

To answer your question, Amy: my name is pronounced like the Italian Renata, like opera divas Renata Tebaldi or Renata Scotto. My last name does not have to be said in French, like author Stendhal. He and I both took this pen-name from a town in Germany: Stendal. I was born there, so it can be said just as one would without the French added h... (But it does add French pizzazz, doesn't it?:)
