Blaming hormones

This morning, as I was eating breakfast and listening to music, I found myself inexplicably welling up with emotion, to the point of near-tears. Now, I wasn’t listening to the Free Haiti concert or Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day,” (stop judging me!) nothing that tends to elicit a negative emotional response. No, it was “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” More specifically when Johnny out-fiddles the devil. Misty-eyed, I said out loud to nobody, “You tell him, Johnny!”On the day-to-day scale of…See More

The He-cession strikes San Francisco

Devastating news in this week’s SF Weekly. It appears that single women can’t find ANY men to date in San Francisco! A six-page spread was devoted to tackling this rare phenomenon, whose mystery somehow wasn’t covered in any of the six seasons of Sex and the City or in the movie. It’s gotten so bad that someone called in the “number 8 pick-up artist in the world” according to an online magazine called TSB (This is Surely Bullshit?) to come to San Francisco and help five of these…See More

Dating advice from a guitar-playing meerkat

...dating advice really hasn’t gotten less crazy over time, as evidenced by Yahoo! News’ 8 First Date Tips for Single Women. Married women, be patient! Your first date tips have not yet come. I realize that Yahoo! News is not exactly a reputable source on…anything, though I’ve found that when I try to do dating research, Yahoo! is almost always one of the first links that pops up. So someone must be reading (and heeding?) their advice. Here’s what “love coach” Lauren Frances has to say about…See More

JoJo left his home in Tucson, Arizona for some California grass

I’ve never hated Tucson, my hometown. My homeboy. My home de plume. I’ll defend it to the grave, and have had to defend it many a time, sadly. To asshole boyfriends, to people who call it “the armpit of Arizona” (I’m looking at you, Phoenix! (Also, it’s called Yuma)), to telemarketers who ask where “Tusson” is, to people on Twitter even. That’s how devoted I am to the city that welcomes everyone with Valley Fever, whose rivers are dry dust 90% of the time and whose skies are so blue they…See More

You can spell hospitality without hospital

Thanksgiving day in 2005 was the first time I thought I could die from the cold. It was stupid degrees outside, with a -20 wind chill, and I had a fever. I didn’t know about the fever as we drove from Rogers Park to Hyde Park to cook Indian food with a friend of my girlfriend. I thought it was hilarious at the time, cooking Indian food on Thanksgiving, and it was. But maybe that was the fever too. For those who don’t know Chicago, Rogers Park and Hyde Park are not close to one another. In fact,…See More

Ridiculous "tits for troops" website promises to boost "moral"

I came across this site on my daily internet search for "how to help humanity." Unsurprisingly, boobs come up A LOT in these searches, except when you're trying to save humanity from breast cancer. Then boobs aren't actually that helpful. But this Pink Glove Dance is. Watch it and join the cause!Anyway, Tits for Troops (which is obviously not safe for work, and neither is this post) is pretty self-explanatory, but here's the spiel from their website:"This site is dedicated to supporting the men…See More

Hi there -- just wanted to drop by your page and invite you personally (or at least virtually) to our first-ever She Writes Chicago meetup, celebrating our first-anniversary! We are so grateful to the event's organizer, Eileen O'Halloran, for taking a risk and stepping up to host. I hope you will support her and bring yourself and other women who write (no need for them to be members) to the Chicago gathering. At the meetup writers will take part in the She Writes "Book Communion," where attendees arrive with one book, their own or another She Writers', new or gently used, and leave with another book as a meaningfully way to support one another's work. We will also be blowing out a candle and making a wish for our upcoming writing year -- along with She Writers gathering in 16 cities around the country. I hope you will be part of this historic (well, at least kind of cool) occasion, and RSVP now to Eileen here.

Dear Book Lover:

You may not know me or my work, but I am the national bestselling, award winning novelist of six critically acclaimed novels who has been twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction.

On Jan 9th, 2010 my debut novel, SUGAR will celebrate its 10th anniversary and in order to commemorate this milestone I am campaigning to sell 10,000 copies between now and that date.

“Bernice L. McFadden's first novel begins with the brief, poetic description of a crime so startling that the reader is helplessly drawn in, as if a bright red door stood ajar on a bleak and forbidding house. Pearl Taylor's daughter, Jude, has been found murdered and mutilated near a field at the edge of town. "The murder had white man written all over it," writes McFadden. "But no one would say it above a whisper. It was 1940. It was Bigelow, Arkansas. It was a black child. Need any more be said?" In the years that follow, Pearl catches sight of Jude in so many strangers that when Sugar Lacey comes to town and sets up her unwholesome "business" in the house next door, she doesn't know whether to believe what she sees in Sugar's face: a striking similarity to Jude, dead 15 years. In her sedate but supple prose--rising at times to a light, unforced lyricism in the description of landscape or character--the author perfectly renders the closed and protective society of a small Southern town, the superstitions, gossip, and prying.”

I’m asking that you purchase a copy of SUGAR for yourself, a friend or family member. And yes, KINDLE purchases count.

If you could help spread the word by blogging, twittering ad Face-booking my campaign, it would mean the world to me.

Peace & Light,

Bernice L. McFadden
