"Quick question for those who use a pen name: How do you handle that on a submissions (query letter; submission form, etc.).  Do you list the pen name as the author's name, or legal name and then denote the pen name somewhere?  "

Ode to the Floater Election Judge

Election Day, 20124:30 a.m.: An ungodly hour by anyone’s estimation, made worse by a sinus headache and scratchy throat.  Since it is such an ungodly hour, my inner voice that typically tells me not to “go there,” offers a very depraved thought that is somewhere along the lines of, “Well, if I must be there all day – perhaps I can pass my cold to others.”  Give me a break, we all have these thoughts at some point, and 4:35 a.m. in my bathroom, looking at the dark circles under my eyes, and the…See More

The New York City Marathon Must Go On! Wait...Why, Exactly?

So, I have been silent on the whole New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg’s apparent need to correct the ails of the world, or New York City, at any rate, one Big Gulp at a time.  In a time when New York and New Jersey residents are in need of assistance to make it through another day, however, the Mayor and New York City Marathon Race officials have determined that it is in the best interests to “let the show go…

I am not one to order magazines.  I don’t know why, but the only times I really read them is in the waiting room at the doctor’s office.  So, imagine my surprise when magazines start showing up at my house.  Perhaps a bit naively, I thought since we recently moved, we were getting a free magazine in the hopes of liking it enough to subscribe.  Yeah, I have no idea where that came from, especially since it has never happened in the many, many times I have moved.  Did I…

Anne, Delighted to have you in the novelist group. If you haven’t done so already, you might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion.

We do a live chat at 1 EST on the first Wednesdays of each month, with instructions on how to participate in the "Our Water Cooler" box near the top of the group page. And we save the wall for discussion, but welcome links to helpful blog posts on the “Links to Helpful Blog Posts for Writers” discussion thread and to published books in the “Our Published Novels” one.

I hope you’ll enjoy the group.

Thanks so much for the kinds words. It's helpful to hear stories from the "other side" of this chasm between marriage and single life as a parent. I believe you are right that it will get better. In some ways getting out of limbo and finally ending the marriage lifted a tremendous weight off me. My daughter recently told me she was worried we would get back together. The volatility of his behavior hurt them all deeply.  I just didn't realize how much it had affected all of us. I look back on the separation now as a time for healing. One of my daughter's aspires to be a singer/songwriter and boy has this fueled her writing...and mine:)  So there's the silver lining I think. I've never been a big believer in turning lemons to lemonade, but these days it seems like a good idea!
