The Rewards of Courage and Persistence

Kara Richardson Whitely has written a bold and riveting memoir that tells about her struggle with food, and her surmounting obstacles as she prepares to walk up Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, while raising money for an AIDS cause for children in Africa. I had the pleasure of meeting Kara at a recent Mediabistro event in New York City, which she attended with her husband Chris, in order to promote her book. Kara credits Mediabistro and its workshops with helping her write this…See More

An Illuminated Past

Nov. 12, 2010Just Kids creates a frame around all the work of Patti Smith, the writer of this elegant memoir about her life with Robert Mapplethorpe, the photographer who died of AIDS in 1989, as well as the work of Mapplethorpe himself. Both artists were each other's muses, visionaries whose work, however different it was from one another, challenged established mores and shone with a unique brightness, and darkness. Their work was more than edgy. It was new. Mapplethorpe took leaps no one had…See More

The Nature of -- Sublime

August 5, 2010We're taught to believe life is a Kodak moment, and most of us spend much of our lives trying to hold on to all the good times. It takes maturity to be in the moment and to move on, and maturity is one of those qualities I've discovered I like in Bourdain.I've been trying to figure out what it is exactly that endears me to the man, and believe me, it's more than just charm and good looks. Despite the fact that he claims to be jaded, he always comes off as an eager host on his…See More

Taking Snarky to New Heights

July 28, 2010Anybody who knows me or reads this blog knows I'm a fan of Bourdain's. I fell upon his show, No Reservations and was smitten; then read his books, Kitchen Confidential; A Cook's Tour; The Nasty Bits, and the infatuation grew. As a writer, he's hot. He's made an art of the rant, and is as willing and eager to skewer himself as others. "See, what I've done and do to myself. Don't mind me," he seems to tell us.But of course we do mind. And of course he wants us to.Who wouldn't adore…See More

The Smart Set's Summer Reads

July 26, 2010We are now at the peak of summer, and that chaise lounge under an umbrella, that cool couch in an air conditioned room, and time spent out of academia may mean we all get the chance to read a little more. I asked a few really smart, cool friends what they like to read, and here are their responses:A magazine editor suggests Dali's Diary of a Genius, and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.A science writer: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tollen.A journalist: Animals in Translation by…See More

Those Wild Texas Women

One of the reasons I enjoy blogging so much is because I really don't have to write or show up here unless I want to. I've been busy, and some of that busyness has been about reading the wildest memoir ever.I'm not surprised that it was written by a Texan. The few Tejanas I have known impressed me with their rapid-fire wit and rapacious curiosity. They had pistols where their mouths should be and shot stories out, true or not, fast and fearlessly. To tell you the truth, they intimidated me a…See More
