Not A Balanced Breakfast: Gender Stats in Publishing for...2009?

There are more women writing today than ever before, but what kind of recognition are they receiving? Well, not as much as you might think. My teacher distributed a handout the other day in class with the following statistics, which she found in an article by Amy King on the VIDA: Women In Literary Arts website. They show that, in terms of prominent book awards and “best of” lists, gender equality hasn’t changed at all.Check out these startling gender distribution statistics for, not 1950, but…See More

Austen, loved your blog on gender in best lists, etc. I pitched a similar piece and got a lot of interest, but everyone wanted numbers on men vs. Women publishing books in general - mostly male editors thinking it might be explained by men publishing many more books than women. Did you find any numbers on this? If so, I'd love to know them. I was finishing a novel at the time I was pitching the piece (last winter, when the lists came out) and couldn't come up with anything in the time I had.
