Women's Battles and How We Can Improve LIfe for Women

The issues facing women in our country are really not new or just a problem in America. We are actually in better shape than in some other countries. This doesn't diminish our problems here. I am really tired of the excuse that this misogyny we face as women, began with Eve. My response is this, that:  Adam chose the fruit, Eve didn't twist his arm. Yet, men are not held accountable for his decision. It is all Eve's…See More

Love, Harmony and Beauty

I am writing because despite the fact I am not 100%, the world is calling to me.I am so sorry that this man made a video which disrespected Allah. This is a thoughtless, selfish and sad use of free speech. The ability to exercise free speech is a responsibility and this man ignored his responsibility. It is of no comfort, I understand, but people have made fun of Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Buddha, and the Goddess…See More

The Beauty in Your Art and Life

Oak Alley Plantation, NO; Acrylic on stretched canvas; By Barbara MattioArtists, musicians, writers, dancers, photographers, painters, sculptors and a host of other creative people often feel that there is no beauty in life and that they must create it in their art. The problem is that not all of the beauty in your life is found in your poem, sketch, song, dance, novel. There is beauty all around and it is important to…See More

"Traditionally, a woman's life was not her own; she belonged first to daddy and then to husband. Indeed, she was raised with the expectation that she would be---literally, body and soul-----someone else's. Today, women are claiming their lives. We still choose love and intimate relationship, but not as reasons for being. We can no longer live through others. "------Marilyn SewellWell, our most disgusting Congressman is…See More

Ignorance is not Bliss

Chautuaqua Institute, NY Photo by Barbara MattioLife is often confusing, distracting, overwhelming and a draining rut of work and obligations. Everyone is so busy these days and trying to get so much done. They overwhelm us and at the end of a day or a week, you find yourself without satisfaction, joy or bliss. As women, we have so many people around who without malice drain us of our energy and sometimes our sanity. You…See More

No Greater Love

Lake Erie sunset by Barbara MattioFinding our voice is most important to any artist, regardless of their medium. Looking for the authentic voice within is important for all creative people but it is not always easy.  All people, including all artists must find their authentic self within. That doesn't happen without real work and self examination. This is not an easy excavation but it is a necessary one for each of us.…See More

Extraordinary Life

"The only difference between an extraordinary life and an ordinary one is the extraordinary pleasures you find in ordinary things."------Veronique VienneHistory has given us a parade of saints, seers, poets and philosophers who have instructed us to embrace "bliss" here in this life and not to wait until heaven. In America, Joseph Campbell began to teach us about bliss. He was followed by Bill Moyer's, The Power of Myth. "If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of tract that has…See More
