What a great post -- I especially like this observation: "I think part of the answer lies in the gender issue itself. Women are more likely to read a man’s book, whether it has been written by a man, or is just more geared toward a male audience. My…

Clear as mud. And I did an informal count on the top 100 and it looks about 70% male. Hmmm. Perhaps part of the problem is with the publishers themselves? If the books written by women are not getting published they can't get on the list now can the…

Publishers Weekly announced their list of the top 100 books published in 2009 and were “disturbed” to find that the top ten contained not a single woman. In fact, the top 100 was close to 70% male. I find this disturbing on several levels. First, wh…

Disturbed? Well, yes...

Publishers Weekly announced their list of the top 100 books published in 2009 and were “disturbed” to find that the top ten contained not a single woman. In fact, the top 100 was close to 70% male. I find this disturbing on several levels. First, what are the criteria for a ‘best’ book? Are women somehow less capable of writing a ‘best’ book? Or is it that publishers are more eager to publish books written by men? How can it be that in a society that is predominantly female in general and in an… Continue

Welcome to the NaNoWriMo-group, Beth!
I am glad to see another Nano-veteran on board. I only took part once before, and the input from seasoned Nano-authors into the group was really great, from plotting (or not-plotting) beforehand to tricks how to follow the story through hills and valleys.
I am looking forward to seeing you around She Writes and the group :-)

Thank you so much for taking part, and for posting your thoughtful comments and your blog. I am honored and inspired! Also Alicia Ostriker, who is an award-winning poet and a role model for us all, wrote to me earlier today to say what you said -- that even if you dig into the 100 Best Books of the PW list you only get about 25% women. NOT OK PW!
Warm best,
Kamy

This was just so beautiful. I truly related to the efforts to find sources of comfort - like God - and what happens when that fails. I hope to read more of your writing, because it was very enjoyable.

This just broke my heart. I have so much respect for what you do. It's so hard, because everyone (especially children) behaves a certain way for a reason - but when they're irritable and grumpy it's hard not to let that affect your behavior. Thank…
