Help Your Friends to Help Your Book Go Viral

If you haven’t impregnated a Kardashian, toppled Wall Street, or starred in your own syndicated un-reality show, you may not have an instant platform for promoting your newly minted book. Let’s face it, for most first-time authors—and even for many of the multiply published among us—the first…

OUCH! My Left Brain Hurts: A Newbie Author’s Newfound Wisdom about Book Promotion and Platform Development

Posted on April 29, 2013 at 12:00pm 6 Comments

Lately I’ve noticed that when I’m walking around, I have a feeling that I’m leaning to the left. Or at least my head is leaning left.  It’s due, I’m sure, to all of the recent exercise I’ve been doing in there which has resulted in my new mental muscle. As with any new exercise, sometimes there’s some pain involved. At times, I feel I can hardly hold up my head. Ouch! This book launch stuff has got my left brain exhausted and kinda sore.

Okay I Was Wrong: My Story Arc from Social Media Wallflower to Media Party Hopper

Posted on November 29, 2012 at 4:30pm 25 Comments

I first have to admit that I'm over 50. That likely predisposes me, much as I hate to admit it, to some natural reticence about social media. I still write thank-you notes, with a pen. I make phone calls. I send cards. While I’m not hesitant to admit my age, I don’t like to admit my reticence. I like to think of myself as progressive, embracing of new ideas, and an ever growing, evolving type. But the whole Facebook, Twitter thing--from the outside looking in, anyway--just seemed a silly…

Art Finds a Way: Confessions and Celebrations of a Former Publishing Snob

First, the confession. For years--decades even--I've harbored a small, secret, but acrid judgement about the self-publishing world.  I confess this now, red-faced in front of my dear friends and esteemed authors who have gone the self publishing route. Please forgive me.  I'm confessing a dirty secret here and I've developed a new outlook.  And even you fine self-published writers with beautiful, well-written books have to admit that the self-publishing process has created a certain…

Thanks Betsy!  But they say thousands of books are published everyday?  I know a lot of amateur writers throw books on Amazon without editing, and subsequently those are the people who give Indie authors a bad rap. So I guess what I'm saying is that so  many do finish books and truly it does puzzle me.  Writing is hard work and dedication and no matter how one gets published, it is a huge feat!  Kudos to you!

Wow! I feel your pain and could add a bit of my own. My journey as an Indie author is a bit different than most. I am an Indie who isn't an indie author! I suppose I'm a hybrid. Long story short, I won a publishing contract with Abbott Press in a Writer's Digest contest. I even attended and spoke at the New York Conference in April! But the road has been ROCKY and I can't swear I would do it again if I had it to do over. But I agree 100% with you - the publishing industry is indeed going through tremendous changes and if an author has a chance of making it, he/she must keep up with those changes!

I agree with you on another point - every good book will find a home. Again, you must be diligent and work your tail off. Nothing substitutes for hard work. All the social media in the world won't help you if you don't have a good product! Study and work on your craft and above all else, never give up!

For my story on how my novel, Mama's Shoes, got published go to my blog. http://wwwrebeccaelswick.blogspot.com/2011/12/never-say-never.html

And, I'm happy to welcome you as my friend!
