MFA Application Season…Again

A Twitter post from my MFA program here at the University of South Carolina (@scmfa) was a reminder of the 12/15 application deadline. It is hard for me to believe that this time last year I had just decided that I could do a full-residency program and was starting the application process. It was a lot of work but I had three great teachers/mentors to help me through it. If you are applying for graduate school, I would suggest getting help. I had all three of them looking at my writing sample…See More

Settling In

Reposted from the Writerly HabitNick and I arrived in Columbia on August 1st. After that, it was a lot of waiting around for our things. The movers did not show up until the 12th. Luckily, my sister was here to help us unpack (though it was hard because she left on the 13th). I…See More

Summer (Break) is Here!

Well, I survived finals. My last paper (on the use of literary allusions to Poe as a stepping stone to critiquing mass culture in Native Son) went better than I expected. I had to cut out a lot of what I wanted to include because I was limited to ten pages. I guess that is a sign that I am ready for grad school.Anyway, I have been practicing my French translation for the exam I will need to pass at USC. That is good and all but I haven’t done any writing since the semester ended. I suppose it…See More

One Door Closes...

I have two weeks left at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Ok, three if you count my final paper for American Literature. For the past few weeks, I have felt ready to leave…anxious even. Tonight it struck me that, after I turn in my last paper, I will not be returning. In August I am leaving to start an MFA program at the University of South Carolina. I feel ready for the change. I have lived in Colorado Springs since I was eleven and I want to experience something new. Still, it…See More

No Conference

Reposted from the Writerly HabitSo I did not get to go to the Sigma Tau Delta conference this week to read my work “Patient States She Hates Herself.” I was bummed but in a way relieved; I have a lot of work to do over the break. It looked like we were going to get funding but then the airfare tripled.I have been trying to focus on my trauma presentation coming up at the Shepard Symposium. This week I am housesitting and I thought it…See More

Another Acceptance

Reposted from The Writerly HabitI received an acceptance from Emerson College last week. Nothing yet on funding though. I would really love to be on the East Coast and Boston is a major publishing hub. We’ll see. I am sure no matter where I end up it will be a great program. Part of the reason is that I, contrary to advice, submitted work about trauma and social justice. I figured that I had not idea what a school was looking for and I…See More

To Book or Not to Book

I have been invited to participate in a reading at the Sigma Tau Delta International Convention. My chapter is trying to raise funds for me to go. I can pay now but may not get reimbursed. If I wait, the airfare will be crazy expensive (it is during spring break). My question is, if they can’t reimburse is it more worthwhile to my career for me to go? I don’t know. It is an international organization and I will have a dedicated time slot to read my work. I just don’t know what to do. At what…See More

Look Out Genre, Here I Come!

Reposted from the Writerly HabitIf you are like me, you have several novel ideas that ended up in a folder somewhere; lost and never written. When my sister suggested we write a genre novel together one of my old ideas came to mind. I got out the sample chapters and the two of us were able to use them and write an outline in a couple of hours. We are going to have to figure out how to co-author. Right now, we are going to alternate…See More

Yesterday I read a great article in the Jan/Feb issue of Poets & Writers. It is the inspiration issue and it was phenomenal. I spent all day yesterday reading it. The article I want to focus on is “Inner Space: Clearing Some Room for Inspiration” by Frank Bures. In the article he talks about spending less time online in order to create room for inspiration. He cites a University of California study that showed “in 2008 Americans consumed thirty-four gigabytes of information per day, the…

Expect to Write Crap

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 11:00am 0 Comments

Recently, I read a really terrible short story. I mean really bad. To be fair, everyone writes crap when they start out. It is called paying your dues. The trick is to know when your writing is terrible. I’ve been writing since I was twelve. I had years of writing absolute garbage. As a writer, you read more and you write more and you start to improve. That’s just how it works. Consequently, I think this is where most people get discouraged and give up writing.

Sometimes I still write…

I enjoyed your latest post, The Creative Habit. Thanks so much for this recommendation, I'll certainly add it to
my wish list. Good choreography has the ability to conjure believable,
suspenseful scenes rife with tension. I was fortunate enough to have a
2nd year creative writing prof devote half a class to helping me
choreograph the bus accident in the prologue to my novel-in-progress;
she even had us rearranging chairs and boxes (and each other) to
simulate the actual bus. My subsequent revision was so much better and
met with much positive critique in our next workshop. On the subject of
solitude, I am a creative hermit of sorts, despite my large family and
extended family, and make as much room for solitude as I can, though
others are not quite so understanding. Peace to you and yours for the
new year and beyond...
