Whether it's an essay, a book proposal and sample chapters, or an entire manuscript, at what point do you decide you've done enough editing and tweaking and finally submit?  I'd love to hear opinions…Continue

Writing and social networking

Posted on August 17, 2010 at 9:56am 0 Comments

I'm a social media junkie.

I love Facebook (an addict according to my husband). I love Twitter and have been known to spend a Friday night having a virtual #wineparty (sans wine since my meds are incompatible with alcohol). I love message boards and websites that connect like-minded people (like SheWrites).

For me, social networking is about connecting and sharing. It's amazing, really.

BUT...

I fear that social networking is turning into a mass… Continue

Home is sea salt and gasoline

I stepped off the plane into the thick, humid air.

Home. Virginia Beach.

This place has a story; it knows mine. If we drive to the rec center, I can point out the spot in the woods where I kissed a boy, though I wouldn’t tell him it was my first. I can show where I was warned during driver’s ed when I forgot to yield when making a left turn. I can navigate the streets to my old home with precision, instinctively knowing when to push a little harder on the accelerator and… Continue

I know I am on the right track when someone reads something that I never even thought of and points out something that makes perfect sense. I heard Salaman Rushdie say something like that at a reading last year. How gratifying. I am right, again!!

I hope your vacation is going well.

Thanks for the friend invite, Brooke.

This sentence you wrote was no intriguing: "I can show where I was warned during driver’s ed when I forgot to yield when making a left turn."

Not that "where I kissed the first boy" was uninteresting. It was just more expected. "Left" turn was at once specific and universal. It's what Lee Gutkind talks about when he describes what he looks for in a good submission.

Hi Brooke,
I lost my home in a fire years ago. It was a pretty horrific event
(we were trapped in the house with our four-year-old) and the two years following were really tough. I wrote an essay on it, and am thinking about sending it out to some magazines for publication.

It's not often you meet another fire survivor. Cheers to us!
