Profile Information

Who I am:
I have been writing stories most of my life and spent 35 years as a freelance photojournalist and sports public relations expert in Hawaii, California and Washington. The one thing missing from my curriculum vitae was a writing degree. A few years after I retired I returned to college to get the degree and that is where I am now. After slogging through required university entrance courses I am about one year from graduation, and finally enjoying advanced writing classes. I'm told I inspire others to always think young, but I think it's the craft of writing that inspires me.
Connect with me online! My site, blog, or Twitter handle are:
I am currently building a website. My blog, In the Wake of Discovery, can be found at http:haunani77.wordpress.com.
Books I've written, anthologies I've contributed to, and any scripts or plays I've authored:
I've never written a book; I'm doing that now. But I have over a dozen notebooks full of newspaper columns and feature stories that reflect my writing life.
Media outlets that I currently write for:
At the moment I am not writing for any media outlets.
My writing is:
Nonfiction, Memoir, Journalism, Blog Posts
Services I offer to other writers:
Because I am pursuing a college degree at the end of my career, before I graduated from Whatcom Community College,in Bellingham, Washington, I worked in the Whatcom Community College writing center for several years, helping all kinds of students as they struggled with their writing. Of particular interest to me were the English As A Second Language (ESL) students. I even helped an older Afghani student with reading comprehension so he could study and pass his citizenship tests. At the moment, I am making myself available to students in my classes to encourage them with their writing and answer questions about what its like to be a professional writer.
I'm part of these writers' groups or salons:

A kind word

Posted on November 6, 2011 at 11:35pm 0 Comments

I was feeling a wee bit down about my writing and then I met with my writing counselor at school, who couldn't rave enough about a recent chapter I had submitted to her. How amazing is it when your mood can change with just one kind word? I must remember to be the one who passes on the next kind word to another author.

College Costumes

Hi Everyone, I just finished a blog post about some recent school sightings that seem very appropriate as we approach Halloween.  With tuition so costly I can't afford to take classes at random no matter how tempting the class description sounds. Rather, if it doesn't count toward my degree I don't take the class because each credit has to count. But I've learned that a college campus contains a wealth of writing material.  Here's a little teaser fo you:

Ever since I returned to…

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and responding. I am with you on the denial -- if my main man hadn't pushed me to do it,I think I would not have attempted it. But once started, I tell you, it is an addictive way to revise. Paired with a glass of wine and snow falling outside, it smooths even the rough ride of realizing you have to totally re-write sections you thought you could put behind you!

Peace, Niki

Hello Carol!

I want to Thank You for joining my group Blooming Late!

I saw your blog listed in your profile, and think it is very well done and also really like your Magic School Bus post. Someone said that half of doing something is simply showing up. In your case that was really true!

I am really amazed that you went back to school for writing and congrats on your upcoming graduation! You have certainly came to the right place to start your writing career. We have a wonderful group of mature women who are in different phases in their writing careers that are a great source of support, encouragement and inspiration for writing and I hope you find a writing home with us!

Please take some time to introduce yourself to the group in our To Kick Things Off discussion as well as share your writing acccomplishments and goals. There are also quite a bit of discussions and lists to add to and get involved with, so take a look around and see what you might want to participate in.

I am glad you are here and WELCOME to my group!

Hi Carol and welcome to She Writes! I sent you a friend request/private message, but you probably still are learning to navigate :) When you check out Groups, be sure to check out Blooming Late. It's a group expressly for women 40 and up ... and it's one of the most active groups on the site. There's always a lot going on there under the outstanding leadership of Samantha Stacia, and our members are involved in all facets of "the writing life."

Warm regards !

Candice
