Why You Should Never Give Up: Pictures of You on Kirkus Best Books of 2011 list!

I am sitting here unable to work because I'm too excited. My novel Pictures of You was just chosen for the Kirkus Best Books of 2011 List! What is so astonishing to me is that from the moment I went with Algonquin, my whole life changed. I went from someone with meager sales to being a NYT bestseller, a Costco Pennie's Pick, a San Francisco Lit Pick, a Best Book of the year from Bookmarks Magazine, Bookpage AND Kirkus--and I think it really goes to show that you cannot give up.  You cannot ever…See More

Love, grief and food

When you're grieving, people are usually trying to feed you.  But many years ago, in an attempt to outrun my terrifying grief, I got involved with a man who wouldn't let me eat. To leave him meant I'd have to grieve again--so I wrote about it for The London Telegraph --and many thanks to my stupendous UK publisher, Allen and Unwin, for making this happen!  Here is the link:…See More

OMG! These forum attacks are all too common, and they really can creep a person out. It's hard to take jealousy as a back-handed compliment, kin to that grudging admiration of a few close friends, but it sure helps if you can. I'm sorry…

Yay, I got in Salon. Boo, the commenters hate me!

I used to write for Salon all the time, and when recently, a Chinese edition of my novel, Girls in Trouble, appeared with the wrong author photo, I wrote about it for Salon. To me, it was an essay about how so much is out of our hands as authors and also about the meaning of ownership, how an author photo is a physical symbol of "this is who I am and I wrote this book." You might have thought I was writing…See More

I wanted to connect with you and ask for your feedback. I recently did my first on-camera interview for the children's book on child sexual abuse prevention that I wrote, My Body Belongs to Me. Please let me know what you think when you have some time.

I would have been there -- you bet, and celebrated with you at the Algonquin Party, if only. It would have been a little hop from San Francisco, alas!
Would you like to do a book exchange? Algonquin to Algonquin, so to speak? :)
