Happy Ganesh Chaturthi, She Writers!

Posted on September 1, 2011 at 2:54pm 0 Comments

It's Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganesha's birthday celebration, the time when members of a household worship a clay likeness of him, and then submerge it at an immersion site. There are pujas and other rituals, and delicious kozhakottai, a dumpling made from rice flour with a stuffing of coconut and jaggery, is offered at the temple.

I make use of these details in Rescuing Ranu, when I… Continue

I immediately tried to read to my new sister. I was not quite four, but I had memorized some of the poems in A Child’s Garden of Verses. I pretended to read it, holding the book to show her the mysterious hieroglyphics splashed across the pages. That is my earliest memory of a… Continue

Truth and Fictional Truth

Thought you might like a peek at this article I recently wrote for the Indian magazine NRIMatters:

The short answer is: everything and nothing. The set…

Why am I not surprised you taught piano? Music is so a part of your chapbook, not to mention other work of yours. Speaking of which, "Ninety" left an imprint when I first read it. The Mother Poems just keep growing in power and poignancy. There are many lines/images I could single out so I'll start with one:

What’s between us must find another way to stick.

Thanks for reading, and commenting on, my post. The image of your brother-in-law upside down on the wall is one that lingers. :-)
