NaNo Memoir: The Home Stretch

Posted on September 29, 2011 at 10:30am 0 Comments

Less than a week before my 50,000-word deadline!

Though I'm confident that, this close to the finish, I'll hit my goal, I've realized, comparing the first week to the last week, that this home stretch has been harder. But I'm doing it, finally.

I decided to NaNoWriMo it because I think that kind of big,…

Writing Life in Transition

I returned to the U.S. from China six months ago and still I feel as if my life is in this odd state of flux. A puff of wind will easily blow me in another direction.

Most recently, it's blown me back to Chicago, (from my parents' home in Minnesota) the beloved city I left over two years ago to go teach English in a dirty, crowded Chinese town. I'm back, wiser, but still full of hope like I was that first I showed up only months out of college. I was jobless then, too, dreams of…

Have you ever felt like this?

Posted on August 20, 2010 at 8:30am 0 Comments

On a group tour of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, our docent took us to this painting by Egon Schiele (a student of Klimt).

Right away, I was struck by how dirty the painting was-- I mean how messy the strokes are, how most of the colors, even the reds and oranges, appear crumpled and soiled-- just like the subject's clothes. His eyes are huge,… Continue

Christina, thanks for checking out the Hot Cross Buns recipe. It's a hoot to smash recipes up against famous people. Right now I'm working on Harper Lee. I enjoy the fearlessness and frankness of your food blog.

Christina, how lovely of you to let me know you read and enjoyed my piece in Creative NonFiction.  I do appreciate it ( like that one too). Happy new year to you as well, and may months of fine writing lie ahead of you!
