Who I am:
www.therealwriter.com is a resource for writers - with tips and exercises and inspiration.

www.embarkingonacourseofstudy.com is a "Sense and Sensibility" inspired project: "A writer, reader, and Austen lover spends a year (or more) embarking on a course of study similar to that perhaps undertaken by Marianne in Sense and Sensibility, without the benefit of Colonel Brandon’s library and with room for diversions, digressions, and (hopefully) fun fieldwork."

It's sometimes silly, sometimes serious. Sometimes a struggle to keep up with as there's so much reading and my work and writing don't leave much time. But it's lots of fun and I welcome more readers and comments!
Books I've written, anthologies I've contributed to, and any scripts or plays I've authored:
Publications include poetry in Poetry, Ploughshares, Five Points, Smartish Pace, Maize, and Blackbird. Reviews in JMWW.
My writing is:
Fiction, Poetry, Memoir, Plays
Outlets where I review books, TV, or film:
Poetry books
Services I offer to other writers:
Yes: editing, proofreading, critique and mentoring services. I also lead online workshops through The Writer's Block (Algonkian Conferences). I help sharpen a client's poetry and/or prose, assist with plot and structure or elements of form, tune dialogue, teach the fundamentals of craft, help prepare a manuscript for submission, or accompany the client in an exploration of the art with exercises and projects. Whether the goal is publication or simply gathering a record of a period in one's life for family, and friends, I respect and honor a client's unique voice and gifts.
I'm part of these writers' groups or salons:

Offering Write Your Book Pitch Teleseminar

Posted on June 14, 2012 at 11:04am 0 Comments

My Write Your Pitch class at Johns Hopkins sold out this past spring so I was asked to do another in the fall. This got me thinking - why not offer a teleseminar so anyone, anywhere, can attend?

So I'll be offering a 2 hour session by phone on the following:

- the 5 parts of a pitch

- exercises to…

Visiting the Jane Austen Exhibit at The Morgan Library

At 7:05 am that Saturday in early March, I caught the NYC-bound train from Baltimore with two friends, Shara and Clare. We were completely silly, taking pictures out the window, taking pictures of each other taking pictures out the window, taking pictures of the train. We all are terribly in love with train rides. I think that, if the plans for our day had just been to ride the train the whole time, we would have been almost as… Continue

Sample post from my Austen--Sense & Sensibility - related blog: Embarking On A Course of Study

Posted on February 18, 2010 at 2:56pm 0 Comments

Fall, 2009:

Finished rereading S&S last night and can I just take a moment to talk about how hard it is to squeeze in all of this reading? I love reading, don't get me wrong. I have often wished someone would pay me for a year to just read, but having a (sort of) deadline for a year of study creates so much pressure. I won't have gotten nearly as far as I hope to by then, I'm discovering. Marianne was going to read 6 hours a day for a 'twelvemonth.' Six hours! I can barely manage… Continue

What a fabulous project you're beginning! Emma also attempted a reading list that she never seemed to make much headway on. I'm doing something similar, immersing myself in reading and writing. It's a lot of work but I'm learning so much about my craft.

Out of curiosity, have you read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? Or Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters? Fun books for the Austen enthusiast.

Looking forward to hearing more about your project!

Welcome to the Novelist – Struggling or Not group, Christine. You might jump in by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion. I’ll look forward to chatting with you!

And I just realized (from your status) that you live in Baltimore. I used to live on a horse farm north of the city, off Butler Road, and my first novel is set there. Lovely city! Watching all the news about the snow, I've been nostalgic remembering how lovely our old farm looked in snow.
