Open mike style readings in Boston or NY?

Started Nov 21, 2010 0 Replies

I live in a really rural area halfway between Boston and NY. Does anyone have information about reading series that allow emerging writers to share their work in front of a crowd? Thanks!

I'm going, and I don't know a soul. I live in the middle of the woods and really need to do some networking, so I figured I'd go to this thing and simply try to make some friends (or enemies, perhaps), the way I used to do as a child in the sandbox. Get in touch with me if you are going, too, and would like to meet in person. All best,CourtneySee More

Does this short story make me look fat?

For those of you, like myself, who like nothing better than to spend the entire day (or week, or year) holed up in a room writing and writing, never answering the telephone to the consternation of friends, I wanted to share my two solutions for keeping up your emotional and physical stamina, without losing muscle tone.1) Buy a jump rope. I love mine. When I start feeling that life as a literary fiction writer has no point, I jump rope for 3 minutes and my faith returns.2) Purchase (for $9) the…See More

Profile Information

Who I am:
Hello Everyone,
I write beauty copy to make a living and fiction to live. I currently wrapped up a collection of short stories and am teetering around in what-to-do-now land. I live in a really remote part of the Berkshires in a log cabin, and am eager to connect with other writers who understand how crazy it can feel sometime to be sitting down and writing, when no one asked you to.

http://lelittleredhouse.blogspot.com/ (On this blog, I post copy that I've cut from short stories.)
http://brightwords.blogspot.com/ (Very outdated professional site.)
Books I've written, anthologies I've contributed to, and any scripts or plays I've authored:
"Bob and the Trees" (short film)
"Rice and Meet" (short film)
"Big Things in Small Places" (forthcoming collection of short stories)
Media outlets that I currently write for:
The Sandisfield Times, Daily Candy. I used to be a freelance writer and worked for many other media outlets, but I bit the bullet and got myself a day job recently, so I now concentrate on my fiction and screenwriting in my free time.
My writing is:
Fiction, Screenwriting
Outlets where I review books, TV, or film:
No.
Services I offer to other writers:
I like to provide feedback and am always looking for willing readers!
I'm part of these writers' groups or salons:
I wish! I live in the woods in the middle of the Berkshires, and haven't found a writer's group yet.

SheWriMo: Quality! Quantity! Is there no way to have both?

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 4:13pm 0 Comments

I am gripped by feelings of helplessness, desperation, futility, caffeine. For a Type A control freak like myself NaNoWriMo is an experiment in extreme discomfort. I can't help but privilege quality over quantity, and yet, I am grateful for the excuse to generate words. To blindly go where one hundred and sixty thousand other people are going...I guess that makes me a productive little lemming. I'm trying to stay positive while heading for the cliff.

I just opened the door to the novelist group for you - welcome! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. I’ll look forward to chatting with you!

Courtney, Adding my voice to the welcome. I started writing in a little outbuilding on a farm in Maryland that was heated only with a woodstove. Your intro of yourself reminds me of that time. :-)

If you’re looking for a place to jump in and write longer fiction (or think you might like to), we’d love to have you join us in the Novelists – Struggling or Not group. Lots of good company there.

Hope you enjoy the site!
