What Michael Ondaatje Taught Me About Building Bridges in My Novel

Author Crush: Michael OndaatjeI was on an elevator with him once at the Virginia Festival of the Book. He asked where a particular room was. I showed him the location on my program. I looked at his beautiful white hair. I listened to his voice steeped with Canada and Sri Lanka. I looked at his hands and thought about all the beautiful words that had come from them. I didn't say "You're Michael Ondaatje!" I knew. He knew I knew (lol). He thanked me and nodded as we got off the elevator. "I love…See More

The Book Deal--Keeping It Real

Someone told me the other day that most publishers want a fiction writer to have at least 2,000 Twitter friends that could turn into solid book sales before they will consider publishing a first novel in today’s market even if they have other publications.I am new to Twitter and looked at my paltry 500 followers and sighed, then laughed. I suppose the 20 or so who have promised to enlarge my penis, guarantee me an instant 1,000 followers or invited me to their sex site don’t count.See the rest…See More

Dreams And Your Creative Power

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 2:00pm 0 Comments

For years I had a recurring dream: I was in a house with many doors. Every door led to another maze of rooms with other doors. In this dream my heart beat with desperation as though there was something that I was driven to find and just couldn't choose the right door. Of course this had everything to do with the stress of my life and my fear of decisons--making the right one--making the wrong one.

When I was pregnant and found out I was having twins, I dreamed of myself in a large… Continue

Things are great here. I haven't done a ton of my own writing since sending the novel out, but I kind of needed a vacation. Now, I'm starting back. I'm in a new writer's group and I was telling them I'd studied with you and Karen, a soon-to-be published novelist in the group, said she loved your work.

Other than that, I'm just plugging along, getting healthier every day and getting used to my kids being in a new school. Hopefully, I can get back to Spalding this year. If not November, then definitely May.

Hi Crystal, I absolutely agree with your blog post. I have a day "off" with spouse down in the city and I am luxuriating in the peace and quiet! I love what you are doing with Mythium and I'm going to check out your stories. Of course, Gumbo attracted me immediately. My own grandmother's gumbo consisted of whatever was left in the icebox along with fresh crab and shrimp and okra. I have yet to taste better! Keep in touch, Nicky
