Travel as Life; Life as Travel

This is today's post from my blog, The Sophia Project. A week ago I returned to North Carolina from Mexico City. I’m a travel junkie and there’s nothing I long for more than the feeling of arriving in a new city, those first raw moments out of the airport when the smells, sights, and sounds of a place first crash into my awareness. I love how travel abroad knocks me off balance, up-ends my…See More

On Mexico City, saying goodbye, and friendship...

Here's today's post from my blog,The Sophia Project.  As I write this, I sit in an empty house in Mexico City. The sun is nearly set, the sky dark and hazy with sunset and smog. A car drives by, speaker blasting reggaeton. A dog barks from across the street. And planes fly low overhead, leaving the airport for someplace else. Tomorrow morning I’ll be on one of them heading home…See More

Self, Deconstructed

This is today's post from my blog, The Sophia Project.  I have about 12 years of journals stacked up in my bedroom. Every now and then, I pull a few out and go through them, reading over my past thoughts, struggles, and triumphs. It's like a message in a bottle in reverse: seemingly unsolvable problems now long forgotten resolved in that magical progression of time.Last summer I had a lot of stuff going…See More

Tuesday Wonder: How to be Led?

This is today's entry from my blog, The Sophia Project.About four and a half years ago, I took my first salsa lesson. It happened because of a dare from my friend Jenny, who'd started taking lessons that spring. I'd mentioned to her that "salsa dancing" occupied a line on my bucket list, but 'til then, I'd been too chicken to try it. So on…See More

Friday Wisdom: What I Have to Give to You...

I did it to myself again. On Monday, I smugly, securely asked you, readers of this blog (have I mentioned lately how much I love and appreciate you for reading, by the way? Because I do): What do you have to give?I asked the question hoping it would provoke thought for you, lead you to some pretty awesome conclusions about yourself, and generally help you rock your world a little harder. And then that little question came back to bite me in the ass. This often happens. Just so you know.In the…See More

Monday Wonder: Gratitude

This is today's post from my blog, The Sophia Project. It's Thanksgiving this week, my favorite holiday.I love Thanksgiving for what it's not about: It's not about over-consumption or buying gifts I can't really afford; it's not about getting stuff; it's not about dressing up or showing off.…See More

How to Control a Life Skid (and avoid a crash…)

Throughout our lives, most of us experience crises, typically painful turning points where we must choose to leave our past behind and strike out in a new direction. The mid-life crisis is rife with cliches: the balding man with a faux tan, a red sportscar, and 25-year old girlfriend, for example. And often our crises feel like head-on collisions, pile-ups on the interstate of life from which we stagger, stunned,…See More

Cyndi, you are great! Thank you for your support. I look forward to following the Sophia project. It sounds absolutely wonderful. And you are so right. Why is it that we women are so critical of ourselves and so insecure? I am 54 and it has taken me many years to gain the modicum of confidence I have.

Thanks again and I look forward to staying in touch on our blogs and with She Writes!

All the best,
Meryl

Hi Cyndi. One more question: I left a comment on your blog and love how next to each person who comments, a cool geometric icon appears. How do you do that? It is so cool - can you teach me how to do it? Would you mind my copying the idea (once learning how)?
All the best,
Meryl

Hi Cyndi. Just wanted to say hello and thank you for visiting and commenting on my blog. I really appreciated your comment and support. What is your PhD in? Do you teach too? Regarding your comment on my blog, first grade is such a cool (but challenging) grade to teach and substituting is even more challenging!

If you (or she) has interaction with parents, I would love a 'shout-out' or referral for my blog, if possible.

What is the Sophia Project? I went to your blog and loved your concept of asking what you could do for the reader. I also try to do that, but as I am just beginning, it is a challenge to get readers. I do have 10 followers and am very grateful for them, and hope to have more as I continue to do this. Please let me know if I can help you in any way - especially if our interests overlap!

Take care and I'd love to hear more,
Meryl
