"Hi Kathryn, my advice to all aspiring writers is to join, if possible, a writing group so that there can be a more objective group look at your work than you yourself can give it. Then you need to start submitting stories to literary publications.…"

I left Ernessa a message through Facebook - I found her page when looking for a link re. the book to include in my post recommending it to my FB friends. I'm sorry to stalk her, but I hoped she would appreciate a pat on the back. Being a writer can be so demoralizing sometimes - having been a lawyer for years, it has been difficult to work so hard for such a long period of time without validation (or perhaps that's just my ego talking). I connected to Ernessa's book, because, though you find strong, smart characters in historical fiction and more somber plotlines, I have had a harder time finding similarly smart, engaging and non-stereotypical voices in humorous or romantic stories featuring African Americans. My own work is similar in genre - when I started it 6 or so years ago, I set aside a darker story that I was attempting to write because I felt a void in what I was reading and had another story idea that I hoped would begin to fill it. I'm really looking forward to Ernessa's future projects.

Dawn, thank you for your response. I'm currently in two writing groups and I've been submitting my stories to literary magazines for ten years now. It's been a long haul. I've published one story that was chosen by C. Michael Curtis from the Atlantic. I've come very close several times to publishing other pieces from my collection. I guess my main question is, how willing are agents and editors to publish a manuscript that doesn't have a firm publishing platform? It's not like I'm not trying to get my voice heard. I'm just not sure what else to do.
