The wildlife

Although mid-May, the temperatures are rising. Yesterday was 102; today's forecast is cooler at 98. I am sitting in the backyard this morning, enjoying the shade and coolness, if only briefly, keeping watch on the wildlife. We have a mother cat and her three wild kittens back here. Two of the kittens, whom I assume are the boys as the third one is harlequin so I know she is female, are running, climbing, and jumping with their mother. We have an appointment at the vet's on Thursday to get mama…See More

Generations

It has come to my attention that I am heading into the final generation. What do I mean by that? Let me give you some background.Almost forty years ago, when my husband and I were newly married, we met a couple who had been married seventeen years. Seventeen years! Oh, my. That was like, forever. They were middle aged, or so I thought, with teenage children. They now have grandchildren older than those offspring were then, and we have a daughter whose age is twice that of those seventeen years.…See More

Death comes during the holidays.

I have held my breath. Another Thanksgiving behind us. No phone call bringing bad news. Last year the call came from Texas the day after Thanksgiving with news that my dear friend, Gail, had passed away the night before, only a few miles from my house. Her sister who made the call left it to me and our other friend to take care of all the issues that come when someone dies, like cleaning out the house. It would be almost Christmas before all the tasks were accomplished and the grief was…See More

Backstory for my historical novel

It was a gray metal file box, sitting at the back of one of the memorial cabinets in the church library. None of us who had been working on the 130-year church history project had taken the time to look into it. The box was labeled--Allied Arts, 1940-1991, but due to time constrains on the committee doing the sorting, researching, writing, and production of a written report, as well as planning a celebration, no one had bothered with a box that belonged to a long-gone women’s group. My husband,…See More

Considering

I've been blogging for almost five years. I tweet, post on Facebook, upload my photos to Flickr. Then I started this blog thinking I would use it to try some different kinds of writing. To see if I could attract a different audience. Not much has come from it. I seldom come by here as I have gotten few to no comments.I also just started writing at another venue, http://cowbird.com/author/delaine-zody/. I really like Cowbird and think it may…See More

The nonmilitary wife

NAS Lemoore, a naval base in the middle of a desert. Sounds like an oxymoron, no? I am headed to NAS Lemoore this morning, accompanying my husband on a photo shoot. He has been asked to photograph the retirement service of a local politician who is leaving the National Guard.  Seldom have I ventured onto a military base even though my husband is actually retired military. I laugh when I say that phrase. He served twenty one years in the Army and Air National Guards and for his service to his…See More

Thinking about 60

You were so busy living life, you didn’t keep track of the years flying by. No one offered the advice that 60 would be here some day. As the train whistle blew, coming down the track, getting closer, though, you knew. You knew that there was no going back, that each day was precious, that life was not a dress rehearsal. You started handing out that advice to younger people: Don’t fret over what will happen, enjoy what is happening. Do more, see more. Don’t wait until you’re older to do things.…See More

Transformational

Our thoughts can transform our life. Spend time in quiet contemplation, letting your mind open to ideas. Be open to light and space, freeing oneself of earthly demands on time. The tyranny of time can create a feeling of frenzy and also one of remorse. We will not accomplish all we wish in the time we are allotted, either daily or in a whole life time. So, stop, quiet your mind. See what thought will come to you.See More

The grandparents

We are not elderly, nor frail. We are in good health. Accomplished. Successful in our careers. Still lots of energy and vitality in us. Until.Until we show up at our daughter's to babysit the two grandchildren. Ages three years and nine months. By mid afternoon we need naps. At the end of the day, a glass of beer and a quiet dinner. Falling into bed, we are asleep in minutes. When the alarm goes off at 5:30 to start another day, I moan and roll over. Why did I agree to do this for a whole week,…See More

Oh, the quackery of it all

For the past few months I have been very involved in the life of a friend whose health, both physically and mentally, has deteriorated. Thrice now I have taken her to the general doctor she sees. Once, at his direction, I took her to a psychiatric hospital, but they wouldn't admit her. If the doctor had only seen her that morning, in his office, he would have known she didn't need to be admitted to a hospital but rather needed some general medical care. Care, that's the word. Those three times…See More

Hello Delaine,

I want to personally Thank you for joining my group Blooming Late!

I took the liberty of looking over your profile and blog, your blog on wordpress is very clean and well written. The sub-title "The world view from my perch" is creative too! You seem to have your voice well established also. Your posts in here are extremely informative as well as interesting. You seem to be well on your way to writing success!

I consider writers the scribes of this age and an almost sacred calling which is why in our group its very important to us to keep a nurturing environment for the optimal growth of our writers. I truly hope that your involvement in the group will be helpful and do much to contribute to your writing success.

I see you have your great blog and Twitter set up but do you have a Facebook page or anything? All 3 are very important to be established for best results in both publishing with a house or self publishing. You'l find many resources as well as women who can be a greathelp in getting your full platform underway.

Now please if you would, on the front page of the group, please read the WELCOME TO YOUR GROUP section for all the info. about the group as well as Rules of Conduct and what is expected, Id really like it if you would read it thoroughly as it will get you right into the swing of things.

And above all have fun and happy writing!
