Diane Meier commented on the blog post 'Blurb is a Verb: Sexy Scenes and Book Signings'
Liz and I share an agent, the wonderful Mitchell Waters. Unlike Liz's experience, when he first read the manuscript for my novel, 'The Season of Second Chances', he did question a V rough sex scene that makes its presence about half…

Well! Thank you for your invitation. I accept.  But as I reside and work in the heart of New England in Litchfield County and the middle of Manhattan, I'm not exactly sure what I can add to your "Sierra" experience.…

Isabelle - In trying to see who was asking to be my She Writes "pal", I found a quote of yours - something like: "I could do without television and the purchasing of non-essential items..." that made me laugh out loud and…

Yes, Cathy.  I agree. I love my books too.  But as authors, we shouldn't be too judgmental about how people come to our work.  We want them to have an unclouded experience with our content, not fight the delivery system -- and…

The Messenger and the Message

E-Junkie recently asked if I’d discuss my feelings about having a book produced in an e-book format. But I have to admit, at least for me, it’s kind of a non-issue. I am a marketer and as such, schooled to never confuse content with delivery system. I’m keenly aware of the fact that the Internet brings all kinds of opportunities to amplify ideas. But none of them as powerful as the endorsement that comes from an authoritative and branded resource. Let’s face it, a rave on the front page of The…See More

The Restoration of Joy #1

The appearance of a dumpster outside our little farmhouse says it all: This house is about to be taken apart. Exciting, I suppose, but disturbing a nest can be scary. Especially since we didn’t intend to do it.Last winter, after having contractors and builders all over the property for the years it took to build the barns, hack out the new drive, sink the well, make the court, and generally manage some very unruly property, we were looking forward to quiet and privacy. Then came the leak in the…See More

Good grief. I don't think anyone would suggest that gender inequities are the cause of all of our "problems".  And certainly, some, of ALL genders and persuasions, may be concerned about the pace, the control, the concepts of…

My Dinner At Bob Guccione’s

Bob Guccione’s death might not seem like the most likely topic on which I might alight. But nearly thirty years ago, I shared a meal with Guccione and his wife and co-publisher, Kathy Keeton, at their townhouse on East 67th Street. His death last week brought that memory so vividly back to me, and with it came a few things to consider. While the worlds of magazine publishing and advertising are much aligned for me, I had few reasons to be hobnobbing with the publishers of centerfold magazines on…See More

Judgment. Good, bad, and yours. The terrible problem of reviews.

Posted on October 6, 2010 at 8:19am 0 Comments

There have been a lot of questions this past year about the difference between my day job in marketing, and the writing of my first novel.

“Not so different,” I’ve answered to the surprise, apparently, of many.

Serious marketing requires serious communication. And great advertising copy comes from a deep understanding of your markets, your target customers, the lives they lead, and the way they express themselves. So, putting my characters into a story, wrapped up in a… Continue

Not well, my friend. My fingernails all seem to be splintering and splitting at once. It looks like I bite my fingernails but I don't! It looks like an animal gnawed on my fingernails actually--but I don't have any pets! And do I see a few more threads of white weaving through my hair? OMG! --I'm one of those people who always tense up whenever someone tells me to relax, too. But yoga helps! Try that!

Balancing writing with 'real work' and real life - is already a challenge, as you all must be finding; and discovering moments (I stole them and hid them in which drawer??) that might also give me the time to interact with others - here and elsewhere - is beginning to feel like the sun that might melt my wings.

In other words, it's so seductive, but at some point time management is going behave just like the sleep I didn't get and the ice cream I shouldn't have eaten. It will come back to bite me, straws will break camels' backs, wings will melt and every cliché that tells us we'll pay the piper will be, like the fat lady, singing.

Still, I will try. There are some marvelous women on these pages. I'd love to meet you all -- hear your stories -- cheer you on --. Even if you can't hear me, I'm thinking about you, I promise.
