I realize there's no copyright on ideas, and some of my own work has been based on public domain concepts like Shakespeare's plays. However, it's tough for me to grit my teeth, initially, when I see a…Continue

Thank you for this. Gives food for thought. Reminds me of my improv classes (raising the stakes, they called it).

New discoveries of past titles

I started this because sometimes, you uncover an amazing novel a few years after its publication. Though it isn't hot off the presses, it becomes a must-read or a personal favourite. The one I've just finished is Half of a Yellow Sun, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, published in 2006. She's also the author of Purple Hibiscus (2003 - winner of a best first book award) and the 2009 short story collection That Thing Around Your Neck. Now, it's been a while so I don't remember if someone posted the…See More

One thing holds true for self-publishing - and is now becoming a necessity with traditional publishing also. The more of a network you have, especially if it's stacked with people who are rooting for you and encouraging you, and can pass the…

what's the best thing do when you find your short story imitated in a blockbuster?

I realize there's no copyright on ideas, and some of my own work has been based on public domain concepts like Shakespeare's plays. However, it's tough for me to grit my teeth, initially, when I see a film (in this case, Daybreakers) using exactly the same idea I used. In this case, it was in 1996 for my short story Oomblaug Day, published in Parsec magazine. This mag has since gone under but I've posted my story, circulated it to friends, etc.I know there's no way to prove they got the idea…See More

You are so right about writing in many formats. Some of the pieces I'm most proud of were published online. Unfortunately I wasn't paid for them, though.
