The Name Game

Posted on July 3, 2010 at 4:29am 0 Comments

The other day, I was reading the news online and I saw this headline “Why Jake left Vienna?” My first thought was, “How come this guy’s dislike of Austria merits a headline?” As I read further, I realized that the headline was not about the city of Vienna but about the chick on The Bachelorette whose name is Vienna. I glanced at the article and made a mental note to watch more TV besides animated sitcoms so I have an idea what is going on in the entertainment world.

Anyway, I started… Continue

Putting on Big Girl Panties

Posted on June 25, 2010 at 6:36pm 0 Comments

One of my favorite sayings I used on my daughter through the years was “Put on your big girl panties and deal.” I was not trying to be flip or minimize her many dramas, but I was trying to make her strong and capable of handling life’s little and not-so-little obstacles. I figured the sooner she could think on her feet, the better off she was.

Now, I will admit I have broken the big girl panties rule on several occasions when it comes to her. I have accompanied her on most of her job… Continue

The Big Tease

While I was in the midst of giving birth years ago, the young medical resident, who was lucky enough to get the Christmas Day shift in labor and delivery, tried to explain to me how the hormone Oxytocin worked and how it was going to help me deliver my baby. I will admit that my mind was on other things, so his lecture failed to impress me. Now, had the nurses been able to locate an anesthesiologist who was not downing eggnog and who was willing to come to the hospital to give me drugs before… Continue

Learning Not to Sweat the Small Stuff

Posted on June 14, 2010 at 4:00am 4 Comments

This week, I had lunch with my high school friends. When we get together, the conversation is never boring. It’s a combination of memories, gossip and current events.

When we had dinner last fall, we were talking about a party we attended back in high school, and one of my friends asked if I remembered giving James Gandolfini, the future Sopranos actor, a ride home. He went to a high school near ours and apparently, we ran into him one night. I had no recollection of this whatsoever,… Continue

Hi Donna, It seems we "met" or crossed paths as your profile and name seem familiar but I had taken a long hiatus and I have the memory span of a guppie at times.

Otherwise, someone on Facebook brought attention (positive that is) to you and I happened to read an article of yours concerning Twitter and following people. And, I wasn't expecting humor...

Well, social media (love and hate) is one of my specialties and humor/satire one is one of my favorite things to read (and write when I can). So, I was hooked!

I really look forward to reading more of your work. Have a great day!

Hi Donna,
Thanks for befriending me. I'm still laughing about the Driver's license. Re: learning not to sweat the small stuff, I actually said "no" to doing a workshop for my RWA chapter. Hurrah for me! To quote Pogo (if anyone else is that old) "We have met the enemy . . . and he is us."

Wonderful Donna. You remind me of a close acquintance of mine in Sweden. She's always so full of life and terrific ideas, not to mention a lucious lifestyle. Keep in touch dear. - Marsha

I loved your story about the driver's license. Great stuff. I'm not photogenic and get hysterical every time I have to get my passport renewed (thank goodness it's every ten years, now). Each picture that I think is absolutely the worst that was ever taken of me is surpassed by the next passport photo. Ann

This is a big step for me...I have suffered from a mild case of fear. Fear I really can't write and I have been fooling myself for years. But when you think about it, even the guy who comes in last in the big race is still a runner. So even if I come in last, I am still writing...right?

Do artistic rituals have the power to transform? Is all intentional art a ritual?

Today a mandala ritual was posted by Maureen Doallas, link to her blog below: To kick off this discussion, let me explain the intention of this art/ritual from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.  Prayers are said throughout the building of the mandala,…See More
