Off the cuff

I’m just going to let this fly because I’ve been feeling like the biggest writing boob ever.  No, wait, don’t feel bad for me, I do this to myself with the best intentions.  I want to write and then I get in some kind of writing groove and everything is all sunny and shiny and happy and wow and then *smash* the world stops for just a second and the crack in the fabric of the universe gets bigger.  Know what I mean?…

Throw me Thursday: Move

This belated Throw me Thursday post is written on behalf of my good friend Rebe who spent yesterday moving from one place in Denver to another. Cheers, Rebe!

We had to get rid of the cat and the dog too before we could move from the house to the duplex. I don’t know when it happened, just one day I came home from school and Ma said and they were gone.

Sherry liked the cat, she tells me now, but didn’t care for Bear left out on a chain most of the time… Continue

When I was younger, but still an adult, I was obsessed with my body. It didn’t fit right. I had curves, sometimes too many, was never straight and bony and flat like a flapper or those girls with the right clothes and attitudes, the right everything that I wasn’t.

I’d sometimes lie on the floor pushing out sit-up after sit-up...

Throw me Thursday: Miscellaneous

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 10:54pm 0 Comments

The holidays are eating me up. The writing updraft of November has stilled into a deep, frozen hold and I feel I’ve nothing to say save for a few spare memories shaved off the sides. The following post is a combination of Throw me Thursday suggestions: Andy Grenia suggested The Velvet Underground, @MandeeSears said, “Missed opportunities”, and my husband said, “Porkchops” that for some reason ended up here. It doesn’t make sense, but it…

Oil and Rust

I have a friend who says, “Enlightenment is lonely. You can’t relate to people the way you normally do.” She cites inner peace as a kind of impairment where our regular conversations fall into meaningless excess, and I understand.

This is how I feel about writing. More...

Victoria, loved Dani Shapiro's memoir article you posted a link to on Mother Writer. I'm grappling with that funk around what to reveal, what will the kids think later too, but in a way, Dani ends up celebrating that she got to have both--the revelation, the children, as well as the moment alone to love all of it. There are a few topics I've writtten about, sent out, and when the rejection came in, gave a sigh of relief. That's my current barometer for what to sit on longer...revise, etc. And deliberate again, perhaps not to send out again. Tough call.

Victoria,

WOW!  Thanks for the info!  From the writers' festival that I attended, I found out that getting published is all about creating a following.  It proves to publishers that "hey! I know there are people who are interested in my work!"  Heidi Durrow was on a panel discussion about streaming parts of her story "out there" to have group support.

I have written a memoir which I thought contained good description and a feeling for the South( I lived in New Orleans my whole life) I pitched the memoir and was rejected because my query letter didn't really light up the sky ( I guess).  So I started ALL Over again, keeping the integrity of my work and just trying a different approach.

I feel kinda lost sometimes--not being too melodramatic of course, but I can't go up to my family and say "How 'bout if a character does this--especially since not everyone is as interested(not in a mean way) just preoccupied.  I need to bounce a few ideas around and that's when I start feeling like I am writing in a vacuum and I don't know if what I have written is good or what!

I don't mean to ramble but thank you for giving me some ideas.  You have provided me with direction.  Thanks, Cheryl

Hi E Victoria,

Thanks for such a warm welcome!  I have heard from an agent and also an editor that blogging is an important step in publishing.  I am trying to connect with writers to learn from their experiences in blogging.  Any thoughts on the subject?  I appreciate your response.  Thanks, Cheryl

Thanks for your kind comments. It took my 20 years to write my true story. My children still don't have closure on the arsenic poisoning murder of their dad.

Hi Victoria,

Thank you. Actually my oldest daughter was the first one to read Spirit Seeker. As soon as I finished the last word, I handed it over to her. In the beginning I had no inclination to show it to anyone but my girls, but after she loved it, I decided to try and seek representation. My daughters love to read, and my oldest especially can't get enough books in her hand. I can't wait until I can hand her the final printed copy--

Have a good day Victoria!

Jamie
