Boleto al Paraiso: life on the margins in Cuba

My friend Joel leans over in the darkened movie theater as the opening credits roll and whispers “I know this story; I know the muchacho who this is about.”  We are watching the Cuban film Boleto al Paraiso (Ticket to Paradise) at the Quad Cinema on 13th St. in New York City.  The film is being shown as part of the Havana Film Festival.  Joel and his partner have driven up from Washington D.C. where he now lives to spend the weekend.I didn’t really know much about Boleto, but everyone in Havana…See More

A film festival in Havana...hold the popcorn

I started writing this blog more than a week ago before earthquakes, tsunamis and the possibility of yet another war made the world an even scarier, shakier place.  How can I write about film in Cuba at a time like this, I thought, and wanted to abandon the effort.  But then I  remembered the calm resolve on many faces in Japan in the wake of the unimaginable horror they are suffering, the determination of people in the Middle East to struggle for democracy, and the ability of Cubans to find…See More

Where are all the kids in Cuba?

Where are all the kids in Cuba?I had been in Havana for over three weeks of my month-long stay in January before it occurred to me that I saw hardly any kids when I was out and about in this city of over two million people.   I did see groups of uniformed schools children on field trips in Habana Vieja  and Parque Central.  One Sunday, I stopped in a small park to watch a few little ones playing on the swings and monkey bars.  But it was rare to see a pregnant woman or a family walking with…See More

Government workers...Egypt, Wisconsin...and Cuba

Government workers….Egypt, Wisconsin…and Cuba The past few weeks have brought stirring images of workers fighting for their rights in the Middle East and in the Midwest of our own country. In Egypt, workers played a key role in the revolution that toppled an entrenched regime, and in Wisconsin, state workers are on the front lines against an anti-union assault that threatens to spread. When I was laid off from my own government job at the New York City Health Department in August (in a wave of…See More

Hi Elena: Thanks so much for introducing me to this site. I think I am getting more serious about my writing lately. My novel coming along up to 114 pages - a life work! This is a great community, it seems...from what I can see and it is so much to see. How inspiring! How is it going with your book, the contest, etc. Love you always, Mona
