One Last Sweet Summer Read

All books published posthumously come to us shrink-wrapped in heartache, from a voice we know has already been extinguished. There is more sadness still in a subgroup of this category: books that come from manuscripts abandoned during wartime or hidden for safekeeping and discovered when the fighting is over, when the text is all that's left of the author.A brief list of such books: The Diary of Anne Frank, Irene Nemirovsky Suite Francaise, Charlotte Salomon's autobiographical notebook-size…See More

Thanks Nancy and Mary for reading and for sharing your computer -free -zone stories. It's harder and harder to find these places to disconnect because of WiFi, but lovely to think of how valuable they are to all of us (some of us?).

"Only Disconnect" with Hemingway's Notebook

Call it going cold turkey. Earlier this summer, I knew I had to seize -- and slightly alter -- E.M. Forster's famous command, "Only connect..." So off I went to a cabin in the woods of Maine with no Internet or cell phone service in order to "only disconnect." I needed stillness to make headway on the novel I've been writing in fits and starts for years, and the cabin and its setting -- 30 foot-tall pine trees in every direction -- were serene, beautiful, and eerily out of touch. But when I…See More

Hi there--just wanted to drop by your page and invite you personally to our first-ever She Writes Boston meetup, celebrating She Writes' one-year anniversary! The Boston gathering will be hosted by none other than Jaclyn Friedman, author of "Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape (and one of Publishers' Weekly's Top 100 Books of 2009)," and visionary leader of Women, Action Media (WAM!). At the meetup writers will take part in the She Writes "Book Communion," where attendees arrive with one book, their own or another She Writers', new or gently used, and leave with another book as a meaningfully way to support one another's work. We will also be blowing out a candle and making a wish for our upcoming writing year -- along with She Writers gathering in 16 cities around the country. I hope you will be part of this historic (well, at least kind of cool) occasion, and RSVP now to Jaclyn here.
