The Agent: FSG & The Doucheoisie

Wherein sometime winner-at-snacking Erin Hosier bitches about all time loser at originality, The Penis Review

Men: they've come a long way, haven't they? Sometimes it's just nice to sit back and enjoy their successes, especially in publishing. Take the recent announcement that Farrar Straus & Giroux's favorite son, Lorin… Continue

The Agent: Why We Read and Why We Write

Posted on March 15, 2010 at 9:30am 20 Comments

People always ask me why I work in publishing. I usually admit that I ask myself that question every day. As an agent, so much of the work we do with the author is on spec; there’s no salary – we live off the commissions that we make and split with the agency. If I can’t sell your book, and lately that’s a very real possibility, then 15 percent of nothing is nothing. But while it can be a financial bummer, there are parts of this job that I just wouldn’t be able to experience if… Continue

COVER GIRL: Books In The Buff

Posted on September 23, 2009 at 10:27am 3 Comments

Have you noticed all the books sans jackets in the stores? Instead publishers are stamping titles and accolades right on the cardboard. Apparently that's the new thing. Colin Beavan's memoir of living the ultimate green lifestyle is the perfect candidate for no jacket, since no jacket means one less piece of shiny paper to muck up the earth. Bet all the paper its printed on is recycled. Anyway, it works. Thanks, Viking.…

I'm really looking forward to Spike Jones' film version of Where the Wild Things Are, and I just pre-ordered McSweeney's faux fur covered edition of Dave Eggers' adaptation (he co-wrote the script with the director, based on the original story by Maurice Sendak). Who… Continue

Erin--thanks so much to you and Kamy for the She Writes Radio podcast on agents. I'm in Japan these days so I probably wouldn't have been able to join the call, but I wish I had known about it in advance and found a way to join--I would have asked lots of questions! Thanks again, Tracy PS. I just realized you're involved in the Lit Death Match. Todd Z got in touch with me a few months ago to ask if I'd suggest a writer from my Boston-based lit series. I heard great things about the series from the writer I referred (but of course, couldn't join b/c I'm in Japan...) Anyway, nice to run across you here!

Thanks for the comment on How Not To Act Old, Erin -- I remember you from Kamy's group (redheads always connect). I won't be at the next one but will say hell the time after that, or after that....
