Romance of the Writing Life and Where the Writing Happens

It took three weeks to clean, paint and reorganize my office—my garret, my sanctum sanctorum. Part of that time was to transition this space from graphic design workplace to writing/teaching space, another part was to empty it out after 25 years of packing things in, and the other part (likely the real reason) was to avoid a writing deadline. How easy it is to be distracted from the writing, and the persistence needed to allow the muse to visit and take command.…See More

Two more reasons why we read

Touch by Alexi Zentner

The Tiger’s Wife by Téa Obreht

I pair these two stunning books in this essay for several reasons, the least of which is I read them back to back. Though I had earlier heard of both books through different venues, I met Alexi Zentner and Téa Obreht together when we…

Vonnegut's 8 rules for writing fiction

Posted on October 8, 2009 at 3:58pm 2 Comments

Eight rules for writing fiction:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

4. Every sentence must do one of two things — reveal character or advance the action.

5. Start as close to the end as possible.

6. Be a sadist. Now matter… Continue

BTW, your website link in your profile is broken, I fear. least it's not working for me. Was thinking you were going to be at Gaithersburg, but don't see you on schedule. (Maybe you were there last year, when I was very bummed not to be able to attend?)

sorry to have missed you there. I come back for a gig at the Gaitherburg book fest in May, if that's not too far afield!

It's a pleasure to join a group of fellow Washingtonian writers. I've written a novel, but it still needs some work before I can begin sending out queries. Right now the first 25 pages are being reviewed by an instructor from the Writer's Center. Once I get her feedback, I'll be back on the editing trail!

I am especially interested in learning about events in the DC area, so this group should be perfect for me. I went to the AWP conference and loved it. What a lot of good information being shared.

Hi Eugenia,

Thank you for the warm welcome.  I look forward to being active on SheWrites and in DC literary events, including the Writer's Center. I've taken a few one-session book promotion classes there, and felt at home. Every city needs a great hub for writers. Today I'm looking at the hundreds of workshops at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs Conference in DC Feb 2-5. Overwhelming, but something for everyone. Schedule at www.awpwriter.org.
