I have intense respect for the human spirit and our ability to change, grow, find wings and fly.

Hi there, and thanks for dropping by to visit my SheWrites Page. A quickie intro: my primary blog is a research and article blog about family estrangement called, E-Stranged. I'm in the process of researching and writing a book on this fascinating topic. I find it difficult to navigate between all the different types of writing/work I do - so am considering dividing my poetry and photography into their own blogs. For today that feels like too much work ;)

As many will be aware, I have been hard at work on my research about family estrangement. As a part of my research I do what every good researcher does … I trawl Google looking for other writers, books, people who share the interest. As such I was pretty stoked when I found an article in Psychology Today, tagged estrangement. The article was doubly interesting to me as it was written by… Continue

Are You Really My Friend If I Haven’t Met You?

Posted on December 9, 2009 at 2:00am 0 Comments

Yesterday I read a very long winded article about friendship. The article, Faux Friendship, by William Deresiewicz goes to some length to educate his reader why in the advance of technology, friendship has gone down hill. Deresiewicz laments that we ‘no longer have families’ so we have to have friends, and as anthropologist… Continue

Bad Mommy!

Posted on December 5, 2009 at 11:00pm 10 Comments

Shocking?

I see it, out front, no one can miss it, but I can’t believe I am seeing it. Some cutesy card, “I have puppies instead of children. I’d rather ruin my carpets than my life“. I find myself looking around me. Does anyone else see this? Do they SEE this?!

Like so much that passes for humor, maybe this is funny, because, somewhere inside, it resonates .. it rings true.

We will deny it. Mothers do. If you ask us,… Continue

Families Gone AWOL

Posted on December 5, 2009 at 10:09pm 0 Comments

I started my morning with a cup of coffee and reading Allison Gilbert’s well considered article, Parenting Without Parents: How to be a parent without your own. It’s an interesting article and it raised questions for me. For starters, I wondered how hard it had been to find a photograph of a typical, nuclear family of four, cheerfully… Continue

Hi Fiona,

Welcome to Mother Writer! I read your blog post Bad Mommy last night and am still mulling it over. There are so many expectations residing inside the idea of motherhood and so many more fighting their way through the actual living of it. You made a lot of very valid points heightened by the fact that two childless friends of mine have said within the last few days, "Thank you for validating my decision not to have children." Anyway, we're glad to have you aboard. If there is anything you need just drop
a line.

Hi Fiona. I had a peek at your blog. Interesting work. I don't normally do this (especially with members of one of my cherished groups) but...because of your specific focus, I thought you might be intrigued by Birthday Girl, my novel. I'll just leave you the link. Peek if if you like. Hope that's not too pushy. Glad to have you in our group.

Fiona, welcome to Writers in Canada. We're happy to have you with us! Do drop in to our Introductions thread and share a bit about yourself and your work. Tell the group that you're living in Brisbane! Where did you grow up? What brings you to us? Keep in mind that links to books and other well-meant self-promotion efforts are always encouraged!

Hmm that sounds good. I am not sure how everyone else moves around between sites and blogs - my method is probably a bit clunky and I am sure there has to be an easier way!
