Why I'm NOT writing a novel this November

Thousands of people around the world, including quite a few of my blogging buddies, are taking a shot at writing fiction this month - and why not? November has been National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo for short - for over a decade now, and a multitude of eager writers have signed up and set themselves the goal of producing a 50,000-word novel by the end of the month, encouraging and supporting one another along the way. This year, my…See More

One thing that came out of this entire debate that I really appreciated was knowing what the actual numbers were--the gender split of books reviewed in the NYTBR. Finally, everyone is aware that there is a legitimate concern here!

Hi all! I've just joined this group, although I've been on She Writes for several months. I'm not an author - I'm a blogger, and my blog content is primarily but not exclusively book-related. (By profession, I'm an…

Blogging about Books and Writing!

For blogging readers, writers, collectors, reviewers. Please include a link to your blog in your introduction, but please refrain from posting links to blog posts on the wall. We save that for discussion, but welcome blog-post links in the "What You Blogged About" thread. (And no all-caps posts or jumbo book jackets/other imagines anywhere in the group, please. We're trying to avoid self-promo hell.) Thanks!See More

Florinda, Thanks for your concise and thorough review of the so-called Franzen Feud. I am with you in every respect. As a reader I gravitate to fiction that mirrors the real world. I can't seem to get into fantasy, paranormal, or anything other…

Writing about women writing, popular fiction, and #Franzenfreude

While many of us seem to be getting book information and recommendations from book blogs and other new sources, traditional review outlets like The New York Times still carry influence and weight - they still matter. To some people, including best-selling authors like Jennifer Weiner and Jodi Picoult, they matter a lot.Weiner has been vocal for years about the fact that the Times does not review her books, even though she's placed several of them on their bestseller lists - and she became even…See More

Rumors of the death of blogging may be exaggerated

I hope they are, anyway. In addition to being one of my favorite authors, Beth Kephart is one of my favorite bloggers, and I appreciate the way she remains dedicated to blogging. Not long ago, she addressed a Newsweek article on the apparent decline of blogging (quoting Beth quoting the article):"'Blogging has withered as a pastime, with the…See More

BlogHer'10: What's the "publishing ecosystem" evolving into - and where do book bloggers fit into it?

It's hard to process everything that goes on in a conference session when you're one of its presenters, and the time goes by a lot faster. Fortunately, my BlogHer'10 panel, "The Evolving Publishing Ecosystem," was liveblogged, so I won't be making this post into a blow-by-blow recap; there will be some of that, but it'll also include my impressions upon reflection,…See More
