Profile Information

Who I am:
I'm a lifelong Mississippian, except for a couple of short stints in Boston and Colorado Springs. I'm a graduate of the University of Mississippi with a B.A. in English and Psychology (both very useful majors, although the psychology comes in handy for creating characters, and the English background is great for proofreading and editing). I have an M.A. in English from Mississippi College. I taught English and creative writing at the secondary level for twenty-plus years, establishing a creative writing program and an award-winning student literary magazine. I wrote along with my students and learned about writing skills I could pass on to them, but my own desire to write got pushed into the background.

So I'm a late-blooming fiction writer! I've now published short fiction in Prime Number, Good Housekeeping, Blue Crow, Halfway Down the Stairs, Arkansas Review, and Crescent Review.

The opening chapter of SPIRIT LAMP won a best-of-workshop award in Jane Hamilton's novel workshop at Writers in Paradise, Eckerd College, 2011. I'm currently revising SPIRIT LAMP and seeking representation for my first book, WHATEVER HOUSE.

I'm married to a fine poet/fiction writer who is my toughest and best reader. I have four adult sons and six grandchildren, and I'm step-grandmom to three little boys, including a set of fraternal twin toddlers.

Books I've written, anthologies I've contributed to, and any scripts or plays I've authored:
My first novel, WHATEVER HOUSE, is a work of up-market women's fiction set in the late sixties. The second, SPIRIT LAMP, is literary historical fiction set during World War I, the story of an unlikely bond between an elderly black sharecropper and a white teenaged unwed mother. Both novels are complete and would love to find a home.
Media outlets that I currently write for:

My writing is:
Fiction, Blog Posts
Outlets where I review books, TV, or film:

Services I offer to other writers:
I offer adult workshops in fiction and poetry for writers at all stages of development. I also offer individual consultation and critique, either in person or online (with a writing sample approval). I'm available to lead writing workshops for secondary teachers, focusing on creativity in the classroom and effective techniques for teaching writing.
I'm part of these writers' groups or salons:
I follow Writer Unboxed, and I'm part of Wordsmith Studio (an online group). I share writing with colleagues with whom I've shared workshop experiences.

Gerry, Welcome to the novelist group. If you haven’t done so already, you might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion.

We do a live chat at 1 EST on the first Wednesdays of each month, with instructions on how to participate in the "Our Water Cooler" box near the top of the group page. And we save the wall for discussion, but welcome links to helpful blog posts on the “Links to Helpful Blog Posts for Writers” discussion thread and to published books in the “Our Published Novels” one.

I hope you’ll enjoy the group.

Author of The Wednesday Sisters (a nationally bestselling writing group novel) and the forthcoming The Wednesday Daughters (Random House/Ballantine)

Gerry, I haven't either, to be honest. Was here at the beginning and then life stepped in, sideswiped my time and I haven't been able to get back to being active. What can I say? Too many projects, can never say no to a new one, and always think I have 10 more hours in the day than I really do. Good to see you, too.

Hi Gerry - I noticed you are in Mississippi, close to my current neck of the woods.  I worked in Olive Branch until about 4 months ago.  You also lived in the Boston area - wondering if you prefer the Northeast or the Midsouth?  I must confess, even though my husband and I have been here for 3 years now, I miss the north and being near my family.  Looking forward to your posts.  Elisabeth
