Great piece, Erin! And cool about your Chicago author's book sale--always good to hear that Chicagoans are out there representing!

My mother, who used to cut paper for me off a butcher roll when I was trying to write my first "novel" at the age of 10, and who managed to give me privacy and space to do so in a one-bedroom apartment, and always respected when I didn't want to sha…

I plan to be there, Bethany! Thanks for hosting. My mom is having surgery a few days prior to the gathering (she lives with us), and as long as all goes well I'm going to be at this with bells on.

Hi all-- I like Deborah's suggestion for a Chicago meet-up at Women & Children First! What a perfect venue. But since that's the end of July, maybe our June 29 get together could be at The Book Cellar. I would be happy to ask Suzy T if she has any o…

Straddling the Political and the Subjective (or "Why the PW Top 10 List Has the Right to Offend, but Is Still Offensive")

Last week, I attended Margaret Atwood's last United States event for Year of the Flood. The dramatic reading (equipped with a choir singing hymns Atwood wrote for the book) took place at Chicago's Merle Reskin theater, and was so packed that I waited in line for an hour and a half to get Atwood--one of my favorite writers since college--to sign a book. Atwood, as most avid readers know, is not only the recipient of a Booker Prize and numerous other prestigious awards, but is more than a dabbler… Continue

Gina, your comment on Ermelino's email to She Writes was one of the most thought-provoking, nuanced and fair I've read on this whole thing so far. I am really glad you called attention to the personal piece of this, in defense of an reviewer's right to stand by her books (or, ha, her men in this case), and I wonder if you'd consider doing a blog post on the subject today so that we can call attention to it when we compile the list of Day of Action posts tomorrow. Thanks for being here. And thanks for buying a book today.
