Countdown to Publication 7 days out: Greyhounds and Prelaunch Strategies

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done to sell your books?

I hadn’t ridden a Greyhound bus since I was 14, traveling across Texas with my friend Elsie to visit my grandmother. But there i was last Sunday, rolling along from Burlington VT to Boston because it was impossible to get to my meeting in Boston any other way today.

I'd squeezed in an appearance at the Burlington Book Festival. I didn’t quite “move a mountain of books” as Ric, the Fair’s ebullient organizer,… Continue

Countdown to Publication 21 days out: SheWrites (and Parties) for Parity

Posted on September 15, 2010 at 5:30am 3 Comments

Late one Saturday night last May, eyes bleary and neck sore from straining at the computer screen, I was crashing to finish my line edits. I scoured the manuscript one last time for typos, spelling errors and grammatical faux pas.

In a sentence I'd been over many times before, I noticed that “parity” had somehow been transposed to read “a party.” Now we will surely have a party when women reach parity. But we're not there yet. Which of course is why I… Continue

I am quite with you, Gloria: I am notorious for forgetting what I wrote in my last book(s), even in the novel I only just finished. I think it has to do with left brain, right brain: the creative channel is in the right brain, and what does poor old left brain know about that? Not much!

Hey Gloria - funny, I did not want to suggest that you add a book page to the site just about now because I don't know its pub date - as I said in my last writ. Though you say you get easily distracted, the message there is to stay focused on the small things: one detail at a time.

Gloria - I'm shocked and embarrassed two weeks have gone by! Life is busy... I just looked at your site and it does seem that you've got yourself covered, including the upcoming speaking gigs. I don't see a pub date for the new book though - did I miss that? Do you know Kathleen Gage? She's on this site and of course her own. Lots of free marketing tips. My own thought: what can you GIVE away (from your site) that would draw more traffic? A book to a charity? A small donation to a woman's organization? What goes around comes around - best, sd

Hi Gloria - appreciate the friend request, and happy to be... So how goes it in pre-pub world - busy and fun? Looks like you have a bunch of speaking gigs on the calendar so I bet you're a bit of a whirling dervish! Let me know if I can help in any way- Stacey

Thanks for your nice note, Gloria. I liked your Annie Lamotte quote "Truth is always subversive" -- it reminded me of a very similar one I heard from Surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim ( creator of the famous fur-lined tea-cup called "Déjeuner en furrure" or "Breakfast in Fur"):
"Any new idea is an aggression" -- by which she meant: is felt as an aggression.
Cheers, Renate
