Reporting from LAX: A Healthy Amount of Choice

Posted on November 13, 2009 at 12:18pm 2 Comments

I just spent fifteen minutes at Hudson Booksellers in the American Airlines terminal at LAX, where I purchased two books by women writers on our designated Day of Action. This is particularly important here in LA, where our local bestseller lists are not only dominated by male writers, but completely overrun by them.

This week's Hardcover Nonfiction list broke the mold of the past two weeks by finally including a single female writer--Suzanne Somers, and who knows how much of her… Continue

Release (Control) Day

If I hadn’t witnessed yesterday with my own eyes, I might not believe it happened. But it did, and I’m here to tell you the crazy story. I have to tell it in a fast first draft though, because the laptop I’m working on might not stay charged long enough for me to edit and post it. But I get ahead of myself.

Yesterday was a big marketing day, possibly even bigger than today. It was my last chance before release to let everyone on… Continue

Supersonic Freak-Out Time

Despite the eighteen months it took to write this book, and the nine months of production and marketing that’s occurred since I handed it in, it somehow took me until this week to really get the message that it’s going to be a book. As in, sold in stores. Where people I don’t know will buy it. And then read it. And form opinions about it. And subsequently think they know more… Continue

Finding the Back-Door Approach

What’s an author to do when her book attracts barely any media attention at all? Well, if you’re me, first you sit around for a while trying to second-guess what’s going on.

At first, I was convinced that a book released in April, The Horse Boy, had co-opted my parents-take-troubled-child-to-shaman-in-exotic-country angle in the ever-dwindling media slots for authors. Admittedly, it’s a huge… Continue

The Pre-Pub Event

The first time I saw the phrase “pre-publication tour” was in a New York Times article I came across this past spring. It told about how some publishers are deciding to tour authors ahead of publication instead of afterward, sending them around to meet local bookstore buyers in advance of the pub date in hopes… Continue

Thank you for accepting me into your marketing and promotions group! I've just started to get into the writing biz, but everyone is so energetic that I'm already feeling a lot more confident. Thank you very much for your hard work. And even though it's late, congratulations on your publication!

Hope, I am almost finished with The Possibility of Everything.  I am enjoying it completely and there were times in the story where your experiences resonated with me.  As a mother to a son with a chronic illness, a few times you hit the nail on the head with how I felt.  To put it perfectly, I have taken pure pleasure in a simple request for macaroni and cheese.. when my son had failed to eat for days, that was pure bliss.  He actually ate for the first time when he was 4.

Thank you.  I am motivated more to begin/finish my memoir.

You're welcome, Hope. I have sung the praises of the book you told us about in Iowa. Rainer's Your Life as Story, many, many times. So helpful! It was the most useful of all the memoir writing books I learned about along the (long!) way while writing Caring Lessons.

Hope, thank you SO much for sharing your wisdom in comments on my post today! I love this and am internalizing it as my rule:

"I only write essays in which I learn something important about myself or the world at the end, so that the family story is there in service to something larger--not to reveal or expose or justify my choices."

Spot on. Thank you for lighting the way for so many -- including, me!

Hi Hope - Haven't logged in here in quite some time, and now I'm living in Asheville, NC, working on research for a book about Zilphia Horton. Let me know if/when you're ever in this area! Cheers!
