Profile Information

Who I am:
Currently I'm the literary editor of the Journal of the Association for Research on Mothering. I've received an N.E.A. Fellowship in poetry and three Maryland Arts Council grants, as well as residencies in poetry or nonfiction from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

My nonfiction has been awarded the Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society's Gold Medal in the Essay, the Florida Review's Editors' Prize in nonfiction, and the Heekin Foundation's Cuchulain Prize in Rhetoric for the Essay. I live in Baltimore with my daughter, Catherine, and husband, poet Ned Balbo.

I'm the author of a memoir and two books of poems:

Daughters of Empire: A Memoir of A Year in Britain and Beyond (Demeter, 2009)

Assignation at Vanishing Point (Elixir, 2003).

Shepherdess with an Automatic (WWPH, 2000).

My poems appear in the anthologies Sweeping Beauty: Contemporary Women Poets Do Housework (U. of Iowa Press) and White Ink: Poems about Mothers and Mothering (Demeter). A craft essay on epistolary poetry, “Lucifer Matches,” appears in Mentor and Muse: Essays from Poets to Poets (Southern Illinois U. Press).
