Ode to a Dryer

We had a death in the family today.A long-time, faithful member, who was always there for us in times of need. Ever ready to help out, always available, never too tired to lend a helping hand. For twelve, long, hard-working years, she was with us through good times and bad, in sickness and health. She had been suffering of late. Old age and too much hard work had begun catching up to her. We cared for her, pampered her, treated her with great delicacy, and tried to give her the dignity she so…See More

Popping a Pimple

I don't know if I am the only one who feels this way. I am probably just really immature in this writing biz.I am fortunate enough to have a wonderful author who is working with me on my first novel. She is fantastic, and I trust her implicitly. However, when she returns my work to me after editing, I get a gut clenching, sick feeling. When I see all those red, crossed out lines, it is like she is stomping on my children. These are my babies, my words, how dare anyone have the nerve to think…See More

I talk a lot about my mother, but she is the smartest person I know. She says that when she "thinks of herself" her brain tells her that she is about nineteen or twenty.

I don't want to give her age away, (because I am still not too big for a good switching), but if I am forty-two... well.. you can do the math.

When I "think of myself", my brain spouts off that I am about seventeen or eighteen. Now, this can be a big shock when I glance in the mirror first thing in the… Continue

Whew! I just finished an excruciating task. I had just written a little less than half of my book. When I submitted it to my mentor, the first thing she did was to make a painful suggestion. "This is good, but there is one major problem. It is in third person, and it needs to be in first person."

Ouch! I brooded over that for awhile. As I have said before, however, I know what I don't know. And I also know that she does know. So, I began the extremely distressing task of cutting out the… Continue

Hi Janet, thank you so much. I'm delighted that you enjoyed the interview and that you found something useful in it. The Highlands are so beautiful and a place I don't go to nearly often enough. I suppose that's what happens when you live somewhere - you don't take advantage of all that it has to offer and it takes a visitor to get you to make the effort. I really should head up there over the summer. If you're ever back this way, the west coast is beautiful, too. So is Edinburgh - let me know if you're over and we'll meet up. Kate

Janet,
Sorry about using an abbreviation you didn't know. There is a book by Chris Baty called "No Plot-No Problem" where he coaches you on how to complete a novel in 30 days. Normally, people do it in November. There's even a group here called NaNoWriMo. My husband got me the book and I just didn't want to wait until November. So I started today. He encourages you to just let the words flow and not edit or worry about perfection. Like your first marathon. The point is only to finish, not win. I found out there is a twitter gang doing it (do you do twitter?) under the hashtag #JulNoWriMo. I'm a nonfiction writer so I'm just trying to have fun with it.

Janet, just wanted to say hello and that I am enjoying your blog. I am working on my own NaNoWriMo for July and since I don't usually write fiction, it is going to be an interesting exercise. Keep writing!!

Hi Janet, thanks for your comment on my blog post. It's an enquiry from a writer I received as the Fine Line's agony aunt. I'm wondering if you could please do me a great favour and post your comment on the Fine Line site at the link below. It might just give the writer some ideas. How to get Nascar, for example. Thank you so much. Kate
