Soon I’ll be joining the ranks of all the other authors who are hoping their newly published books will find an audience. In the past several months, many of us have been doing what we can to get the word out, mostly through social media: Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Pinterest. How successful these marketing venues have been for us remains to be seen. All we know is that exposure is key, and the more we like…See More

Small Repairs

Once again I have said goodbye to my mother. She lives in New Mexico and each November I travel from California to visit her. Last year she broke her hip and so I was there twice. Each time I visit my mother someone accompanies me, a sister or my partner, though once I did go alone and it wasn’t easy driving across the desert wondering what might happen to me if the car broke down. About forty-five minutes from my destination I had to take a comfort break, and reluctantly I pulled into the only…See More

Growing Pains

Spring in the nursery is a happy time. The bedding plants are a riot of color and the eager young vegetables grow right before your eyes. Flushed with hope and fresh resolve, shoppers load their carts with more than they can use, for who can resist the tangerine zinnias, the deep blue delphiniums, the baby stalks of corn, the hundreds of heirloom tomatoes, each one promising something special. The is “The Year,” customers vow; they have learned from past efforts and this is the year they will…See More

Ghost Stories

Occasionally, always in the evening, my cat will turn her head and stare at something I can’t see. She will follow this invisible entity with her eyes as it moves, apparently, along the wall just below the ceiling. She does not seem alarmed by what she perceives, just keenly interested. After a moment or two, she will blink and look away, settle back into my lap. Whether the object of her attention disappears or she simply grows bored with it, I will never know. Two of my previous cats displayed…See More

Nature and Neighborhoods

Driving wine country roads, I sometimes see birds play chicken with my car. They wait on a branch or fence post, then fly in front of me when I get close enough. If they ever miscalculate, I have not seen the evidence.I don’t know why this phenomenon brings me joy, perhaps because birds appear so serious: hunting for food, attracting mates, building nests, feeding chicks. Who knew they had a gene for recreation? Or that their tiny feathered breasts were filled with such bravery? You might…See More
