Wild Horses and French Horns

My mother used to have a saying, “Don’t count it a day lost when you learn something new”  and she especially liked, “learn a new word.”  She was big on vocabulary.I’ve modified this treasured maternal maxim to include any number of lesser, albeit, practical goals to further edify my life. For example, “don’t count it a day lost when you can talk a cop out of a speeding ticket” or “don’t count it a day lost when you can dodge every call from a bill collector.” And the most recent twist on this…See More

I Will Never Leave You

I hear the low rumble of trucks on the freeway from my porch, back home from my 8,600 mile odyssey. What just last night felt like a predator, the rattle and whirr of tractor trailer rigs, crowding me closer, closer and closer with each mile nearer home, now seems a seductress calling from a distance.http://youtu.be/NIWM7L7moJI It’s like a pack of cigarettes in the dresser drawer, a bottle of booze in the cupboard, it is simply, there. Imagine you're in a low rent Royal Inn Motel in Waynesboro, Virginia, alone, having been on the road for two weeks on a once-in-lifetime, going-for-broke road trip with your 86-pound mutt, in which you're writing a book about your journey. You're hyperventilating, laying on the bed, worried sick that…

The sign in front of the Standard Artificial Limbs store always makes me think of my step-dad, Mike. On the day he died at the VA hospital in Albuquerque, after my mother and I summoned the rest of the family to tell them he’d passed, once everybody took turns patting him on his rapid cooling forehead, we all…

Hi, Jean . . . I just got back from a whirlwind trip (by air) to visit family in southern California. I LOVE the premise of your 'Off the Leash' road trip. Do I dare say I'm jealous? At the very least, I'll get the vicarious thrill of following you along the way. Isn't that what She Writes and Facebook are for?

OMG Jean, I just read your profile.  I was raised in St.Louis.  Are you a native?  If so, what high school did you attend? (Such a St.Louis question)

I just saw your blog and love it. It doesn't start with the event or how you managed with 4 young kids, how people treated you unless I am have not found those blogs yet. I am a people person who tells stories and I just am really interested in how you survived. I am the marketing director for thenextfamily.com and we are always looking for stories and the fact that your husband was gay and what happened to you would go well on our website. Please peruse it and see if you would be interested in writing as a guest blogger for us. You can email me at madgew@thenextfamily.com

I just saw the promo on the she writes page. Excerpt. I have tried to find a blog for you as I would love to read about what happened with your ex and how you coped. This is an amazing story and it just captured me even though I have not lived through anything remotely close to your story. But I know others who have amazing stories to tell. Do you have a website or blog?

Hi Jean. I tried commenting on your blog (which I loved) but had trouble - for some reason blogspot didn't recognize me (even though I was signed into my blog on blogspot). Anyway here is my comment: Great blog - I can't wait to see it as a book! Good luck. Hope you visit me too - I have a blog on parenting that I hope will be a book. Would love your comments!
Good luck! Meryl
