Literary Fiction & Genre Fiction

Someone on one of the forums to which I subscribe recently had this to say: "Literary fiction writers are arguably as much about the way the story is told as they are about the story itself."

It's an interesting statement, and very possibly true.

Which do you write? Is plotting intrinsic to your approach? Character development? The telling of the story? I'm curious to hear other points of view ... let me know!

What's the most useful personal attribute for a writer to have?

Everyone will probably have her own answer, but for me it's humility and the development of thick emotional skin. Humility is the acceptance that I don't know everything (and that in fact some of the things I think I "know," in fact are incorrect!), and thick skin is the ability to take criticism, learn from it, and relegate it to its proper place in the Grand Scheme of Things.
