I'm Still Here

I woke up to coffee, oatmeal and Katherine Gregor wrote a lovely lovely review of I Woke Up In Love This Morning on Smashwords. Now I'm watching a documentary they did on Animal Planet on mermaids. I can't think of a better way to start the last day of my thirties. The months before I turned thirty I remember feeling so nervous. I…See More

Kick It!

All during the weekend I heard a song that immediately reminds me of eighth grade: "Fight For Your Right To Party" by the Beastie Boys. Of course this was because Adam Yauch died at the age of forty-eight, way too young. As mentioned, it reminded me of eighth grade. And how there are times I am so out of it when it comes to current music. In 1986-1987, if you stepped in a multi-purpose room where middle school dances were held, there was one song that had to be played. It was a song that…See More

What's It All Mean, Wayne Shannon?

I woke up this morning feeling good;it's Friday, and tomorrow it will be thirty days until my 40th birthday. Yep, I'm going to be forty. I believe I'm handling it well. I'm not rushing out to get Botox or making plans to just hide in my room on June 5th. No matter what happens, 40 will be an adventure.I had my bowl of cereal and coffee, then started reading Red Room blogs. I do this every morning. Then I went on twitter to start promoting my ebooks. Then I noticed a familiar name on the twitter…See More

"Can We All Get Along?"

It was overcast that Wednesday. I was in a mood. I'd been in a mood throughout that semester; I was in a college creative writing class and survived my first real critque. Our teacher had to go teach a seminar on something so we had a subsititute that wasn't as, what's the word, nice? It wasn't like he tore me apart or anything, but step by step he dismantled this story I'd been working on all semester long. It was about a girl in Catholic School who during a rainy day at school after a fun…See More

I've Grown Accustomed to my Air Mattress

Since my bed broke down last month, people have been asking me when I'm going to get a new bed. Mostly they're concerned. I think people think I'm sleeping on the floor with rags as blankets, shivering, my hair in Mary Pickford braids while "The Swan" is playing in the background.I don't want to sound like I'm making fun of my friends/family, I'm not. I'm incredibly touched by the fact that they care about me and want me to have a bed as soon as possible. However I am learning something that…See More

The Scary Ordinary Man That Was Mike Wallace

He didn't look frightening, that man of a certain age walking to the driveway, the store, the car repair shop. He didn't look like a man that could make a person slam doors in his face or yell "Get the hell out of here or I'll call the police!" But if this man was going to knock on your door and say "Mike Wallace from 60 Minutes" and he wasn't invited, you weren't going to invite him for tea and cookies. You were on your way to call a lawyer, and maybe change your undergarments. He started off…See More

She Worked Hard For Her Money

So it's a typical morning for me. I'm drinking coffee, looking around the Internet. And then I saw Huntington posting a Donna Summer video. This isn't out of the ordinary; Huntington often sings disco around me. He once tried to get me to sing Abba. I did. He never asked again. Wise move. But I started noticing that Donna Summer videos were popping up on the news feed, and I thought oh crud. She's dead, isn't she? And minutes later,…

When I knew it was time to put out an essay collection, I kept debating on what its title should be. I wanted something that would jump out at the reader, saying "Come on, read me!" I wanted something that would fit who I was, what I write about.

A year ago I was asked to write an essay about the Muppets and how they influenced me (the movie was coming out soon) So I went…
