Dreaming of Pulitzer or a Plane Crash?

Have you heard about “The Secret”? Several of the book’s techniques have been around for years and championed by none other than Oprah Winfrey herself. One method uses positive visualization and thinking to achieve your most desired goals. Basically, if you picture yourself healthy, wealthy and wise – you’ll become healthy,…See More

Is writing a catalyst for doom?

There are many spiritual elements to writing the book In Wake of a Following, and with them, comes fear. I worry that stirring up memories from the 1950s Virgin Mary sightings will release a measure of bad karma. My investigation is a lot like descending into a dank, unlit basement. Deep down, I’m troubled. With each bad thing that happens to my loved ones – my sister’s cancer, financial stress, a recent car crash – I wonder. Is my writing obsession a catalyst of doom?I search for strength to…See More

Where has depth of character gone?

It has been advised repeatedly, that to be a better writer, we must dedicate ourselves to on-going reading. I’ll admit, most of the books I’ve read in the past few years have been related to “how to be a better writer”. It’s ironic, really. Does this mean I’ll be doubly good at my craft because I’m pairing both reading and reading on writing? One can only hope.I’ve moved on to the classics, or to authors most celebrated. I am reading East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I have reached the seventh…See More

The beginning of a memoir

When a person stumbles upon a deeply rooted secret, it’s nearly impossible to keep quiet. And yet, that is exactly what my family did for decades. None of us had the gumption to ask dad about the bizarre happenings in Wisconsin. We each furtively hoped he’d one day grant us an exclusive tell-all about the time grandfather abandoned the family to become co-leader of a controversial, anti-communist religious movement. In 1950, my grandfather, Henry Swan, was asked by the local priest to…See More

Writing rules, would you take a risk?

Hell, there are no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something - Thomas A. EdisonRecently, I attended a LIVE Q & A with agent Mark McVeigh at www.writeoncon.com. The session got me thinking. Many participants asked questions around the rules and etiquette to submitting a query. One writer asked, “If my novel crosses more than one genre, should I mention both in my query?”The discussion hit close to home. You see, I’ve gone a step further – my…See More

How to share & write memories (contest)

Share your family stories before it is too late. That’s my motto in a nutshell. I believe everyone has a story to tell. It’s just a matter of digging deep to find those memories. Of course, proof is in the puddin’ - alright, no more tacky clichés - I'm about to issue you a challenge:Grab a pen and paper.Number your paper from 1 – 13.Write down the top 13 experiences you had in your life before age 23.It’s a cinch to write down casual highlights: driver’s license @ 16, first kiss,…See More

A writer's technique: the idea notebook

My kids and I like to take turns sharing made-up stories. Last night, my seven-year-old son began his story with:“Once upon a time there was a little boy who lived in a motor home in the driveway of his parent’s house. He had 27 cats. There were 13 black cats, 13 white cats and 1 orange cat.”First of all, he’s perfectly normal. I had a huge imagination as a child, so why shouldn’t my offspring? Didn’t you dream about living in an RV?In our storytelling adventures, we try to top the night before…See More

Dwell not on negative (writing)

"Let other pens dwell on guilt and misery." - Jane AustenA heavy fog infiltrated my creative mindset ten days ago. I became discouraged and frustrated. But I was not alone, others felt it too. On Saturday, I followed a hash tag (#writers) on Twitter and found a steady stream of negativity:- 20 warning signs your content sucks (my favorite)- 5 biggest mistakes writers make- How not to write a novelTheir doom-y nature played perfectly with my mood. Do purple ravens exist in the publication world?

Randomness can be defined as events that happen outside predictability, prior knowledge and beliefs. I’ll start with an example. What has Paris Hilton done for the fine arts? The answer: NOTHING. And yet, she became the next big thing. Now let’s take this concept to the world of publishing with the idea that a writer’s manuscript, deep within the bowels of the slush pile, is discovered at random – regardless of whether you are Hemingway resurrected or just another want-to-be writer with bad…See More
