I know Megan, it's so true! Weird, really. Maybe the whole point of that was to add new words to our vocabularies.

This takes me back to the days of grade school English class. I distinctly remember my teachers telling us to use lots of adjectives when we were describing something. Isn't it funny how we first learn to write in school, but then have to…

Jane - I came across a new blog today and noticed she had a four-part series on Building your platform. Thought of you right away (regarding Q #4). Here's the link to the first one, and then scroll up to more current posts to see 2-4. =)

No Jane. Long story short, I'm back at editing for the thousandth fifth time. I know I need it to be as polished as possible. A couple weeks from now I'll begin sending the queries.

You are asking questions that I've either asked myself the past six months or am still asking. I was just wondering what "upmarket" meant last night, in fact. Regarding the difference between chick lit, women's fiction, ect. - I…

The Query Bandwagon

Saturday night as I lay in bed trying to fall asleep, I fell off the bandwagon. I don't know where it came from, but out of the blue, with no warning whatsoever, I began to panic. My heart was racing. I tried to be inconspicuous as possible, and squeezed my eyes shut trying to calm myself down, even though it felt as though I could barely breathe.Inhale.Exhale.Queries. Queries! QUERIES!!!It was time to query! (Panic!) I was at the next stage of the game, the part where writing my query was in…See More

How to Write English

Posted on January 15, 2010 at 9:30pm 2 Comments

Today I'm going to share a quote by Mark Twain, mainly because I like it and have been waiting for just the right time to post it (but also because it was foggy day schedule for the girls at school and I'm two hours off schedule already).

"I notice that you use plain, simple language, short words and brief sentences. That is the way to write English - it is the modern way and the best way. Stick to it; don't let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in. When you catch an adjective,… Continue

A Bank, a Banana, and a Little Old Lady

When I was in high school a *ahem* few years ago, I had a little "incident" not long after receiving my driver's license. Now, before I go into detail about my *awesomeness* as a driver, I'd like to point out that I grew up in a very small town, my summer job consisted of "chopping cotton" (which actually means the exact opposite - I chopped weeds in the cotton fields eight hours a day, many times in one-hundred degree heat, thank you very much), and my dad taught me how to drive on the levees… Continue

Avoiding Loopholes

Avoiding Loopholes

Loopholes. Who doesn't love a good, old-fashioned loophole when it comes to getting a job done just a teeny bit faster? My kids sure do. If I tell them to deal with the trash, they'll empty the trash can but the trash strewn across the bedroom floor will remain untouched. (Or the other way around.) When I say, "Put the milk away.", I hear "I didn't use it last!" and "She got it out first!" *insert… Continue

Your Character's Voice: Is it deep? Scratchy? Maybe a little sultry?

Posted on January 15, 2010 at 8:00pm 0 Comments

**Quick note - I have been terrible about posting each blog post here on SheWrites when I post on my blog. I am going to get better, I promise! For now, I'm going to post the past few I've done, hence more than one being posted in the same evening.**

Your Character's Voice: Is it deep? Scratchy? Maybe a little sultry?

I was sitting at my computer last night, messing around on the ol' facebook, when a man's voice blared from the bedroom.

"Who is… Continue

On Oct. 22, there will be an event at the Hanford Library. I'm working with the library to put together the Local Authors Program. This month is the woman who writes the Darcy Sagas. She's from Hanford too and has a major book publishing contract. You should try to make it, many of us writers will be there. It starts at 7 p.m.

Jessica, I'm going to be in San Diego until the 17th. For now, why don't you tap into our critique group and meet the girls in cyber fashion. We all live either in Lemoore or Hanford, two romance writers, one mystery writer, one fantasy writer and a legal thriller writer. But, we're challenging each other to crack the code of the Woman's World romance market for the $$$. Check us out at http://fridaynightwrite.blogspot.com We put up a fresh post on Mondays.

Sunny says she's definitely up for coffee together. Sunny's schedule is relatively flexible, mine is somewhat unless i'm in court or have a scheduled client meeting. Why don't you let us know what might work for you and we'll go from there. If you want you can e-mail me off line at doriohnstad@yahoo.com.
