Wikipedia's Sexism Toward Female Novelists (+ some great advice on an antidote)

Posted on April 25, 2013 at 6:55am 0 Comments

Many of you may have heard the disturbing revelation about "Wikipedia's Sexism Toward Female Novelists" as discussed in the NYTimes by Amanda Filipacchi.

Wikipedia users are taking women novelists off the list of "American Novelists" and reclassifying them as "American Women Novelists."

The writer and critic, as well as Vanity Fair columnist and…

Writing S-E-X in literary fiction

Posted on February 18, 2013 at 9:29am 0 Comments

A friend and a writer I greatly admire, Jennifer Cody Epstein, whose second novel, The Gods of Heavenly Punishment, is out in March, asked me about writing sex in literary fiction, a topic that has come up in just about every Sackett Street workshop I’ve taught, where it is common for these literary writers to completely avoid, sometimes without…

Julia, just saw your post in the novelist thread on the sale to SMP. Congrats! If you are interested in doing a guest post on 1st Books when it releases, do let me know. I know it's a long way away, but I do book forward pretty far, so keep it in mind and let me know when you know your pub date if you're interested. Post run on Wednesday on my blog, and then rerun here on the Friday. I've hosted quite a few SMP authors.

Warmly,

Meg

Hi Julia--I'm glad to have you as just my third friend on She Writes.  I need to start exploring that feature of the site!  And your profile now includes Cutting Teeth as your title, so that must have been decided.  That's a great decision, as it is one of those titles that makes you consider various possible meanings--as in, moms cut teeth, too, and have cutting teeth! It evokes the sharky side of urban parenting.  This will be fascinating to watch your process of building up to a release date, as typically I only hear about new debut novels at the time they are being published.  Kelly

Terror generally precedes a public event, but I hope you find how magical it is to share great books with an audience. I always go away filled up with human tenderness. No kidding. It surprises me every time.
