She Writes Day of Action

I was feeling a little guilty, I just can't help myself ... when I go into a bookstore it is like eating potato chips, I can never buy just one. I knew this time it was for a good reason, to buy a book published in 2009 written by a woman, and even better if it is a woman who is on She Writes. But, when I read Kamy's post that she went into Barnes and Noble and bought 39, well heck, the guilt just melted away.

I bought Hope Edelman's "the possibility of everything" after following Hope's wonderful Countdown to Publication. I also bought Malalai Joya's "A Woman Among Warlords". I bought a couple of soft-cover books as well, one published in 2009 and the other possibly in 2008 but still ... I bought "Timeof My Life" by Allison Winn Scotch, and "Girl Trouble" by Holly Goddard Jones. Now, added to the already looming stack of to-be read books, I'm set for quite some time, but it will be a blast.

Take that PW! What do they know about best of 2009!

Monkey Chatter

Posted on January 14, 2011 at 5:22am 0 Comments

That is what dad is calling the thoughts he has in his racing mind as he lays in the hospital bed drifting in and out of sleep.

Memories of jobs from 40 years ago during his career as an electrical engineer. Talk of Cal Tech and Richard Fineman, his favorite physicist. Recalling his parents who raised him and his sister during the depression.

But the fear is in that monkey chatter as well.

For a man almost 84 who has always been independent and able to care for… Continue

A memory brought to the surface

Posted on December 9, 2010 at 3:06pm 1 Comment

My friend EVF at Penny Jar has been working on memoir, particularly during NaNoWriMo (which she won, by the way). And during that she has often posted and tweeted about sensory memories, like memories brought on by certain smells – your…

What I'm Not Writing and What You Should Be Reading

Posted on November 25, 2010 at 11:18pm 2 Comments

I haven’t been here in a while. You know, doing that NaNoWriMo thing. So where am I? I am hopelessly behind.

I have accepted the fact that I will not win (unless I suddenly get really productive in the next five days and write about six thousand words a day), but I am willing myself not to give up. I do not want to be a quitter.

Can you tell, I am in my I hate NaNoWriMo phase, the one where I repeatedly ask myself, what the hell was I thinking?

But, I still love my… Continue

I LOVE, no I HATE, no I LOVE, no I ..... NaNoWriMo

Here we are, in the midst of week 2 of NaNoWriMo. Unbeknownst to me until this week, week 2 is the cursed week (Week 2 is also apparently cursed for contestants on The Biggest Loser - who knew?). I refuse to do much research on it – no reason to tempt the fates – but as I understand it, if there is a week when most people drop out of NaNoWriMo it is week two. Maybe it is because in… Continue

Hi Julie, Thanks for the very warm welcome. I am looking forward to being an active member of this community. It's exciting to be among so much talent. I haven't started a blog yet but my focus will be on the challenge of transitioning from being in a marriage for most of my adult life to being single at 40 something and learning the new set of rules to play by in this very competitive single adult world :) fun stuff. I am also in the process of rambling about my life in the hopes of creating and honoring the story of my unusual life experiences. Look forward to reading your work.
Warm Regards
