PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BEST BOOKS OF 2009

Posted on November 12, 2009 at 9:00am 0 Comments

Thank you, Kamy, for opening this discussion. When I read the Top Ten List of the Best Books, my immediate response was "Where are the women writers?" As director of WOMEN READING ALOUD, a non-profit that promotes and encourages women writers, I am surrounded by women of excellence. In 2003, I opened my doors to women writers. To ignore this faction of writers is ludicrous. We all know this. When I launched my new book of poetry at Starbucks, the only books sold in their stores were by male… Continue

Julie, That's right; as I have told everyone, the technical term for my current status is that my book has been entered in the competition for the Pulitzer Prize in Letters (fiction). In the spring, finalists will be chosen (I understand it to be 3) and the winner of the Pulitzer will be chosen from these three finalists who are officially announced as nominees. So, although there may be innumerable entrants, there will in the end be only 3 nominees. The best news that I've heard is that although any published work of fiction can be entered, preference is given to books dealing with some aspect of life in America. Great news for me! Sweet Music on Moonlight Ridge invites the reader to visit a special place and time in America: backwoods and rural Alabama in the 1950s, with a group of endearing characters found nowhere else! Hope you have a chance to read it.

Sincerely,

Ramey Channell

Julie, I wanted all of SheWrites to know what a huge honor your being asked to go to Greece to lead a writer's retreat this is! (E-gads -- what a terrible sentence. Think I'll sign up for your retreat myself). Writers from all over the world will gather on this little Greek island to soak up the sun, devour Greek delicacies and to learn and grow and take part in you life-changing sessions. Women Reading Aloud is great but add the beauty of Greece -- Wow!

Julie: How did you start your writer's group? I'm at the outer reaches of Oregon on the mouth of the Columbia. How did you find locals to help? Run an ad? Or perhaps you do everything by email? It would be so nice to have a group to discuss my work with. Can you give me any pointers? Thanks so much.
